This paper argues that a twin approach, one realist and one constructivist, is the best way to deal with the Dokdo issue. From the realist perspective, compromise or cooperation is not a feasible option for resolving the Dokdo issue, which is basically a dispute for sovereignty and territory. From a constructivist point of view, is is an issue of identity. Dokdo is considered to be an inseparable part of Korean territory that must be protected at any cost. Consequently, the only solution to the problem is for Japan to retract its claim over Dokdo, which will be taken by Koreans as a sign of Japan's willingness to reorient Korea-Japan relationship on the right track.

본 논문은 국제정치의 대표적 이론인 현실주의와 구성주의가 독도 문제를 다루는데 적합하다고 보며 현실주의와 구성주의를 모두 반영한 구성주의적 현실주의가 최선의 접근법이라고 간주한다. 현실주의적 관점에서 보았을 때 기본적으로 주권과 영토문제인 독도문제를 다루는데 있어서 타협이나 협력은 그다지 적실성이 없다. 구성주의적 견지에서 보았을 때 독도문제는 역사문제이자 정체성의 문제이다. 한국인들에게 독도는 어떤 댓가를 치르더라도 지켜져야 하는 영토의 불가분의 일부로서 간주된다. 결과적으로 독도문제에 대한 유일한 해결책은 일본이 영유권 주장을 철회하는 것이다. 이는 한국인들에게 한일관계를 올바른 방향으로 가져가려는 의도로 받아들여질 것이다.
