In the rapid change of modern society, the individuals are suffering from a loss of self-identification and a sense of alienation and this kinds of social pathology cause various social unrest. As one of major causes, mammonism and lookism(appearance-oriented view) are rampant in the modern society. Also, rapid and wide spread of media makes modern people lose their sense of presence and be under the control of others' viewpoints and desire. For this kinds of modern people, it is very meaningful and important that they aware the irrationalities of the society and the distorted self-identification so to recover their true self-awareness. In the middle of this process, orientalism such as Buddhism and Taoism can be an effective way to solve the problem caused by the modern social pathology. Especially, the concept of nirvana and the thought of letting nature as it is are the bases of those oriental solutions. To realize those idea, the digital mirror based on orientalism, called 'Oriental Mirror' is implemented. This mirror reflects the viewer's image which is digitally transformed by computer programming and shows the profound meaning intended by author to reveal his artistic presentation through the viewer's reflection as an interactive self-portrait. To emphasize the meaning of a work, two big walls are set on both sides of viewer to face each other and the viewer stands on the space between those two walls. On the front wall, 16 pieces of ceramic plates are attached to consist one big screen reflecting the viewer's projected image which is captured by a live-camera. And the real wall, 2 T-shirts are hang on the white wall to represent the materialism of modern life. This implementation shows the dilemma of modern life which stands between the irrationalities of society and the ideal utopia. Also, it shows the difficulties of modern people who are wandering about the modern society which is affected by social pathology such as mammonism, materialism and lookism. To overcome those irrationalities, this work suggests that people get over the desire such as money, materialism, appearance-oriented view and too severe awareness of others' view. Also, it suggests that they must reach high level of spirit such as nirvana or the sense of letting nature as it is. Those suggestions are based on orientalism such as Buddhism and Taoism. This is why the work is named as "Oriental mirror". Thorough this work, viewers are awaken to realize their identifications and to aware their senses of presence. Also, they are motivated to get over the sense of alienation and to recover their true meaning of presence. Moreover, the work implemented in this study shows the effective space allocation of each materials such as two white walls, the ceramic plates of screen and T-shirts, They play an important and meaningful roles to realize the concept of oriental mirror which gives a motivation to a reviewer based on Orientalism.

급속한 사회변화 속에서 자아의 정체성을 상실하고 소외되는 개인으로서의 현대인이 갖게 되는 각종 사회병리현상들은 또 하나의 사회불안 요소가 되고 있다. 이러한 현상의 배경은 물질만능주의, 외모지상주의 등 현대사회가 불러온 각종 병폐와 미디어의 급속한 확산과 영향력의 급증에 따라, 개인이 존재의미를 잃고 타인의 시선과 욕망에 의해 삶과 행동이 좌우되기 때문이다. 자아문제에 대해 관심이 많았던 서양철학에서는 이처럼 타인에 의해 자신의 행동양식이 좌우되는 문제를 인간성의 자기상실이라 하였고, 자신이 만든 피조물 혹은 문명에 의해 무력해지는 인간상을 자기소외의 문제로 인식하였다. 이러한 현대인에게 부조리한 현실을 인식하고 그 속에 매몰되어 왜곡된 자신을 돌아봄으로써, 참된 자아의 의미를 인식하여 스스로의 정체성을 확립하도록 하는 것은 중요한 일이며, 물질과 욕망에 의해 구속되는 자아를 극복하고 참된 자아를 찾는 하나의 해법으로서 동양에서 제시된 불교의 해탈과 도교의 무위자연의 의미를 되새겨 볼 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 관람객 스스로 자신의 모습을 되돌아 볼 수 있는 디지털 미러를 구현하였다. 디지털 미러는 작가의 의도에 따라 구현된 디지털 기술을 통해서 관람객의 내면을 표현하기 때문에, 작가에 의해 만들어진 관람객의 '인터랙티브 자화상'이다. 여기에서는 두 개의 벽이라는 공간 속에 현실과 이상을 상징하는 T-셔츠와 도자기 스크린이라는 오브제를 달아놓고, 배경은 그대로 비춰지면서도 관람객의 모습은 투명하게 지워지는 디지털 미러를 구현하고, 외형보다는 내면을 중시하는 동양적 가치관을 더욱 강조한 ‘오리엔탈 미러’라고 이름지었다. 이는 소외감을 극복하고 개인의 한계를 초월하여 해탈과 무위자연의 경지에 이르기를 주장한 불교와 도교의 동양사상을 바탕으로 한 자아관을 표현하기 위한 장치로서, 물질적 욕망과 외모에 대한 과도한 관심, 타인의 시선에 대한 지나친 의식 등의 부조리한 현실과 이를 극복하기 위한 이상적 자아관을 인터랙티브 미디어 작업을 통해 구현한 것이다. 공간적 배치를 위한 두 개의 벽, 시각적 효과를 위한 디지털 미러, 그리고 물질만능주의의 현대와 느림의 미학과 사람의 정성이 드러나는 이상적 사회를 극명하게 대비하기 위해 사용된 대량생산된 공산품인 T-셔츠와 수작업으로 제작된 도자기 묶음 등은 물질만능주의, 외모지상주의, 미디어의 범람 등으로 인해 소외된 현대인들이 왜곡된 자아를 인식하고 자기소외를 극복하여 참된 자아를 찾아가도록 동기를 부여한다. 즉, 물질과 외형지상주의에 의해 왜곡된 현실에서 벗어나서 헛된 욕망과 타인의 시선에 의해 좌우되어 소외된 자신을 극복하고 이상적 자아로서의 자신의 모습을 인식하게 하고, 이를 통해 동양적 사상에서 말하는 해탈한 자아, 무위자연의 경지에 이른 참된 자아의 모습을 떠올리게 한다. 본 연구를 통해 구현된 작품은 효과적인 공간구성과 소재들의 배치를 통해서, 왜곡된 현실에 의해 소외된 현대인의 모습을 표현하고 있으며, 이러한 현실을 인식하고 참된 자아로 나아가야만 하는 관람객의 모습을 제시함으로써, 동양사상에 근거한 디지털 미러로서의 의미를 효과적으로 제시하고 있다.
