The widely acknowledged problem of reliably identifying hidden information in computer storage systems has been the subject of much research in the traditional computer systems. With the introduction of faster, cheaper and large space flash memory chips, the transition of storage systems is occurring at the rapid pace from personal hand-held devices to general computing systems. Due to the nature of pure electronic components without any moving parts, storing and retrieving information from flash memory is considered to be inherently different from traditional hard-disk systems which are depending on mechanical parts. Even with the latest advances of flash memory size and speed, there is still an inborn design flaw that allows the media to be exploited. Our research illustrates anyone with a limited budget can exploit modern day flash memory devices to hide data.

일반적인 컴퓨터 시스템의 저장장치에서 숨겨진 정보를 찾는 방법은 많은 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 근래에 와서 특히 새로운 형태의 저장 매체들이 등장하고 있고, 보다 값싸고 대용량의 정보를 저장할 수 있으면서도 기존의 하드 디스크보다 전력소모와 속도면 에서도 월등한 플래시 메모리가 일반 컴퓨터 시스템으로부터 모바일 디바이스에 이르기까지 빠른 속도로 대체저장매체로서 사용되고 있는 추세이다. 플래시 메모리는 기계적으로 움직이는 부속이 없이 전적으로 전자적인 요소들로서 구동이 된다는 면에서 기존의 하드 디스크 저장매체와는 근본적으로 다른 정보 저장과 추출방식을 지니고 있다고 할 수 있다. 최근의 괄목할만한 플래시 메모리의 발전에도 불구하고 근본적인 디자인상의 결함으로 인해 기존의 매체와 같이 정보를 숨기는 데 쓰여 질 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 저 비용으로도 그것이 가능하다는 것을 보여주고자 한다.
