The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare illustrations in elementary school physical textbooks of Korea and Japan and provide the basic data which is needed to make better textbooks. To achieve this purpose comparative analysis was used on the new version of elementary school physical textbooks of Korea and Japan from 3rd to 6th grade. The contents of study are to compare book size, the number of pages and chapters and analyse illustrations according to the small categories, grade, six external forms and three internal roles of illustrations of Korea and Japan physical textbooks. The results obtained thorough this study are as the following. First, book size is almost same, however, the number of pages of Korea is more than two times than Japan and the number of chapters of Korea is 5, although Japan is 6. Second, there are pictures the most both in Korea and Japan, especially more than 95% of illustrations of Japan are pictures and there is no photo. Third, the most of illustrations of Korea and Japan provide informations about activity. But it is difficult to distinguish the roles of illustrations of Japan, because it is not clear.
