The purpose of this study is to apprehend the desirable characteristics of a display plan through 36 modern architectural properties converted to exhibition halls. The architectural elements preserved even after dedicated display are floor material, internal pillars, and stairs, while ceiling is the least preserved, with 19 of 36 cases been modified. The spatial elements have no reduction according to the division of the existing volume, but there is the spatial expansion due to the removal of partitioning wall between the exhibition rooms and by removing the ceiling board and exposing the roof structure. The wall elements were severly modified due to the installation of display walls to secure display area, which has rendered it impossible to figure out the internal elements of the walls before dedicated display at all. The changes in material and color are the most common for change in decoration elements, and the damages due to the installation of display walls were the greatest.

전시용도로 전용된 근대건축문화재 36건을 대상으로 건축구성요소, 공간구성요소, 벽면구성요소, 의장구성요소 4가지 15개의 항목으로 분류하여 내부공간의 보존범위 및 방법을 살펴본 것으로, 건축구성요소로 보존되고 있는 것은 내부기둥과 계단이며, 천장의 경우 36건 가운데 16건으로 가장 심한 변경이 이루어졌다. 구조적 특징은 그대로 유지하고 있으나, 조명 및 설비방식에 의해 천장의 재료와 형태의 변경이 나타났다. 공간구성요소는 기존 볼륨의 분할에 의한 축소는 없으나, 전시실 간의 칸막이 벽 제거로 인한 수평적 확장과 천장 반자를 제거하여 지붕구조를 노출함으로써 천장고를 확보하기 위한 공간의 확장을 가져왔다. 벽면구성요소는 전시면적을 확보하기 위해 전시벽의 설치로 변경이 심하게 나타났으며, 이로 인해 전용 이전의 벽면의 내부요소를 전혀 파악할 수 없게 되었다. 의장구성요소의 변경은 재료, 색의 변화가 가장 크며 벽면요소와 마찬가지로 전시벽 설치에 의한 훼손이 크다. 36건의 전시장을 통해 가장 많이 사용되고 있는 내부 공간의 보존기법은 시선보다 낮은 부각형 진열장, 또는 이젤과 같은 이동식 진열대를 사용하여 창문 아래 유효 벽면에 전시물을 배치하여 창호를 보존하기 위한 방법, 벽면 재료와 내부 기둥을 보존하기 위해 보강 프레임과 강화유리를 사용하는 방법, 내부 벽면을 보존하기 위해 전시판이나 전시벽을 이격 설치하여 원형의 파손을 최소화하면서 아일랜드 전시방식을 이용하여 벽면을 보존하는 방식을 채택하고 있다.
