Through a British architect Peter Barber’s Villa Anbar built in Saudi Arabia, this study explores gender differences in architectural and the possibility of it’s subversion. In Saudi Arabia, there still exists the discrimination of class and sexual discrimination. Those are directly exposed in spatial configuration of the house. It was during the spring of 1991 that British architect Peter Barber received an interesting brief. The client–a Saudi romantic novelist who spent much of her time in London–commissioned him to build a three-bedroom family residence in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Peter Barber’s aim was to explore the relationship between classes and genders with the architecture. With the design of Villa Anbar, Barber reinvented the rules of a Saudi house in which the male areas are dominant. Those of the females and those of the servants, which are both separated by walls, are suppressed. Peter Barber investigated the power of the gaze to determine the division of space in domestic architecture. From the most public area to the most private one, the eye was directed in very specific paths through different layers, either giving a full view or only a partial one, sometimes merely implying what could be seen.
