Kim-Sung-Suk(金星淑; 1898-1969) became a Buddhist monk, when he was young. Later he went over to China to devote himself to his study and played numerous activities for the independence of Korea. This study intends to divide his life into five periods and analyze his thought each time. Looking through his life, his activities and philosophy was appeared diverse in various aspects. Nevertheless, his ultimate philosophy of activity was concentrated on the construction of “New Country” which was beyond the ideological struggle. A slogan, “Let's struggle to construct a new nation of freedom and happiness,” indicates that his philosophy is to pursuit for freedom and happiness. He made strenuous efforts for “New Country”, which was blessed with freedom and guaranteed people's happiness. It is unfair to underestimate Kim-Sung-Suk not to know the exact shape of the world, because of his diverse way to struggle. And the philosophy of “freedom” and “happiness”, which have been motives to act all his life, is still valuable for the present divided Korean situation. In this sense, not only is he a revolutionist in an era, but he is also endowed with an all-time universal thinker.

운암(雲巖) 김성숙(金星淑; 1898-1969)은 청년 시절 출가하여 승려가 된 다. 그 후 승려의 신분으로 중국으로 유학하여 조선의 독립을 위하여 수많 은 활동을 했다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 김성숙의 사상을 그의 생애와 관련 하여 다섯 시기로 구분하고, 각 시기별 활동과 이념을 분석하였다. 그의 일 생을 통해 보면, 활동과 이념은 다양한 양상으로 나타났지만, 그 활동의 철 학은 원천적으로 이념 투쟁을 넘어선 ‘새 국가’ 건설에 있다. “자유롭고 행 복한 새 국가 건설을 위해 열심히 투쟁하자”라는 구호에도 드러나듯이, 그 의 철학은 ‘자유’와 ‘행복’의 추구이다. 김성숙은 ‘자유’가 있고 ‘행복’이 보 장되는 ‘새 국가’ 건설을 위하여 일생을 분발하고 투쟁했다. 때문에 투쟁의 방법이 다양한 모습으로 드러났다고 해서, 그를 세상 물정 모르는 담론가 로 평해서도 안 될 것이다. 물론 그를 평생 움직이게 했던 ‘자유’와 ‘행복’이 라는 철학은 분단된 한국의 현실 속에서도 여전히 가치를 지닌다. 이런 점에서 그는 한 시대의 혁명가일 뿐만 아니라, 전 시대를 포괄하는 보편 사상가로서의 면모도 갖추고 있다.
