The purpose of this research thesis is to shed light on the history and culture of Tongdosa Buddhist Monk University. To do it, this researcher intended to make the historic review on this Buddhist Monk University, from macro-perspective. In this context, this research thesis made the reexaminations on how Kwangwon Tongdosa temple went through ups and downs during the occupation of the Japanese Imperialism. Subsequently, this thesis conducted the analysis of how this temple was operated after Korea was liberated from the Japanese imperialist oppression, how it was renamed a Buddhist Monk University. Also, this research thesis looked through the history and ideas that academic professors and instructors had, in a bid to study the tradition of Tongdosa Buddhist Monk University. And at the same time, this thesis reviewed school ethical codes, regulations, interdisciplinary rules, curriculum and number and activities of graduators, and presented the characteristics of this university and the upcoming tasks, in accordance with such factors. Against this backdrop, this researcher believes that it is necessary to make the comprehensive reviews and reexaminations on the modern and contemporary history of the Tongdosa Temple, and such reviews and reexaminations are essential for providing the blueprint for the future's Tongdosa Temple.

본고찰은 통도사 승가대학의 역사와 문화를 종합적으로 살펴 본 논문 이다. 이 논고에서 필자는 객관적인 근거에 의하여 현재의 통도사 승가 대학이 있기까지의 역사를 총체적으로 살펴보려고 하였다. 그래서 일제시기 통도사 강원의 변천 과정을 살피고, 이후에는 해방 이후 통도사 강원의 운영 그리고 승가대학으로의 전환 내용을 정리하였 다. 그러면서 현재 통도사 승가대학의 전통을 더욱 살피기 위해 역대 강 주, 강사의 이력과 사상을 조사하였다. 동시에 강원의 학칙, 청규, 학제, 교과과정, 졸업생 현황 및 활동 등을 정리하였다. 이러한 바탕하에서 통 도사 승가대학의 특성 및 향후의 과제를 제시하였다. 이와 같은 검토는 통도사 근현대사, 통도사 수행의 역사, 통도사 수행 의 역사에 포함되어야 할 것이다. 필자는 이 고찰이 통도사 승가대의 성 찰 및 미래지향의 검토를 할 때에 필요한 근거로 활용될 것을 믿는다.
