This dissertation organizes several topics that have been omitted in the studies of the life history of Dowui national teacher of Buddhism. Dowui Guksa is a highly respected monk in Korean Buddhism as the founder of the Jogye Order. Therefore, precise and clear knowledge of his life history has a significant meaning in Korean Buddhism. Knowing this significance of the study, this article examined the exact years of his birth and death, the origin and status of his family, his going to Dang dynasty for search for the Dharma(入唐求 法), the introduction of zen of southern order(南宗禪) by him, and activities after coming back from abroad by analysing related literature and documentary records. For concrete understanding of this topic, the study done in this dissertation should be further investigated in connection with circumstances of the time, the stream of the Buddhist society, and the tendency of individual prose writings.

본 고찰은 한국선종사에서 뚜렷한 위상을 갖고 있는 도의국사 연구에 있어서 그간 연구의 공백지대였던 생애사의 몇 가지 문제를 정리한 글이 다. 도의국사는 그의 위상으로 인하여 조계종단의 종조로 추앙을 받고 있는 고승이다. 해서 그의 생애사에 대한 정리는 매우 중요한 의미를 갖 고 있다. 이런 배경에서 본 고찰에서는 도의의 생몰년대, 가계와 출신성분, 입당 구법과 남종선의 전래, 귀국 후의 활동 등의 문제를 관련 문헌자료의 분 석을 통하여 살펴보았다. 추후에는 본 고찰에서 살핀 내용을 당시 시대 상황, 불교계 동향, 개별 산문의 동향 등과 연결하여 더욱 구체적으로 연 구해야 되리라 본다.
