The cultural environment for medicinal plants is directly connected not only to natural conditions and but to economic feasibility. In relation to natural conditions, an examination was made of national climate, soil distribution, the optimum arable land of medicinal crops in each region and each variety, and in relation to cultural conditions, medicinal crops-producing and culturing areas, human resources and the main variety of each region. In the country, there are 942 indigenous species and 54 introduced species, 596 species of which are main medicinal crops. In the case of cultivars, the number of medicinal crops decreased from about 370 species to 42 species (about 35 herbs and 7 arbors). According to the 2009 statistics, 15 species of medicinal crops and 5 species of fungi and forest products, about 20 species in all, were cultivated in 2,403-hectare land owned by 3,941 farm families, of which output reached 12,974.1 ton. Altogether, there is a need to expand the production infrastructure of domestic cultivation. In addition, indigenous species need to be protected by management and development based on natural conditions and economic feasibility and by the support for medicinal crops. In particular, flexibly responding to surrounding environments was judged to be the key to economic competitiveness and stable cultivation.

약용식물의 재배환경은 자연조건 뿐 만아니라 경제성이 생산에 직결 되었다. 자연조건으로 우리나라의 기후와 토양 분포, 지역별 약용작물의 품목별 재배적지와 주 생산지를 고찰하였고, 재배조건으로 약용작물의 생산과 경작 지, 인력과 지역주력 품목 등의 재배환경을 고찰하였다. 국내 약용식물의 종의 분포는 자생종942종과 외래 54종이 있고, 주요 약용식물 596종이며, 식품활용 품종은 117품목에 90여종이었다. 국내 재배종은 370여종에서 42종 (초본 35 여종 목본 7종)이 약용작물로 재배되었으며, 2009년의 통계에 의하면 약용작물 15종과 버섯류, 임산물 등으로 5종 등 20여종이 농가 3,941호가 2,403.0ha에서 12,874.1ton을 경제작물로 생산하였다. 국내재배 생산을 늘리고 자생종의 보호에 자연조건과 경제성을 기반으로 한 품종관리개발과 약용작물의 재배 지원이 필요하였다. 그리고 주변환경에 대처 하는 유연성이 경제적 경쟁력을 갖는 가장 중요한 안정적 재배 조건으로 나타났다.
