Hwang-chil(Dendropanax morbifera Lev) is a natural paint extracted from Hwang-chil trees that grow naturally in a warm-temperate forest on the south and west coast and islands of the Korean Peninsula. Lacquer has a black color, which has been used from ancient times. Hwang-chil has a transparent gold color and rich sabbattic perfume with the effects of calming and lowering the blood pressure. As considered so precious in ancient times, Hwang-chil was rendered as a tribute and only used for the emperors like Qin Shi Huang, Taizong of Tang and Dschinghis Hhan. Hwang-chil trees were cut off bv the people who were suffering from an excessive tribute in the Joseon Dynasty period. As a result, Hwang-chil trees have been known as a extinct species of tree. Some researchers have conducted research on Hwang-chil recently. The author has collected historical data on Hwang-chil and done research based on them. The paper is the result of study on them.

황칠은 한반도 서남해안과 섬에 형성된 난대림 숲에서 자생하는 황칠나무에서 채취하는 천연칠이다. 고대로부터 사용해오던 옻칠은 검은색을 띠는 반면, 황칠은 투명 황금색을 띠며, 안식향을 내포하고 있어 그 귀한 가치 때문에 진시황, 당태종, 징기스칸 등 황제만의 전유물이었으며, 전량 조공을 받쳐온 칠이기도 하다. 조선 말기에 공납에 시달리던 백성이 전부 베어버려 250여 년간 찾아볼 수 없었으며, 최근 몇몇 관심있는 연구가들에 의해 연구되고 있다. 본 논문은 현재까지 밝혀진 사료들을 모아 정리하는 동시에 그동안의 황칠에 관한 연구결과를 정리하였다.
