This study explores the marriage life of the woman who failed as a woman after the war in “Downtown”. The heroine Riyo, aged 30, went to Tokyo with her son, Tomekichi, aged 8 and started peddling hawking when she realized that her husband did not come back alive when he went to war 6 years ago. She encountered Yoshio Tsuruishi, aged 29, who came back from the war and found that his former wife had already married another man while he was sent to Siberia. Yoshio saw the life of Riyo was even more difficult than his own and decided to take her and her son, Tomekichi to Asakusa. However, on their way back from the place, they had a heavy rain and stayed in a ryokan. In the one night stay, they had a serious relationship. The relationship between Riyo and Tsuruichi illuminates the negative circulation of married lives, which many husbands found out the fact that their wives had already married other men while they were away from home and tried to marry other women instead. Especially, this novel emphasizes the agony of women who were in the destructed married lives. In addition to this, after 2 days, Fumiko suddenly let Suruishi die after he promised Riyo to provide a financial support. The author drew her strong will of women's independence into the "down town" as Riyo faced a difficult situation and had to solve it without Rusuishi's support.
