Koo, Ji-Hae. 2012. Trnasfer of L1 writing proficiency among EFL students: Testing the threshold hypothesis with Korean 9th grade EFL Learners. Journal of Linguistic Studies 17(2), 135-156. This study sought to investigate the relationship between L1 writing, L2 writing, and L2 proficiency, hypothesizing that L2 proficiency will act as a moderator variable in the relationship between L1 and L2 writing proficiency. Thirty seven 9th grade Korean EFL students were administered to measures of L2 proficiency, L1 writing, and L2 writing. Results from the linear regression analysis with L2 proficiency as a moderator variable revealed that L1 writing proficiency acts as a predictor of L2 writing only for the high L2 proficiency group. The L1 and L2 essays were also coded according to Connor's revised Toulmin model to examine for rhetorical pattern transfer. Linear regression analysis with L2 proficiency as a moderator variable revealed that more rhetorical pattern transfer occurred among the high L2 proficiency group. Results are seen as to support Cummins' threshold hypothesis, and implications for teaching are discussed. (Korea University)
