Kim Jaewon. 2012. A Study on 'Babel', the Virtual Etymology of English 'barbarian' and Korean 'beongeori(벙어리)/beobeori(버버리). Journal of Linguistic Studies. 17(2), 21-35. The purpose of this paper is to study the word 'Babel' & its kinship words, and set up a tree diagram for 'Babel', the virtual etymology of English 'barbarian' and Korean 'beongeori(벙어리)/beobeori(버버리)' on the assumption that the onomatopoeic word 'Babel' meaning "confused medley of sounds" is from the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. 'Babel' representing the unintelligible sounds 'babababa' or 'bəbəbəbə' is linguistically significant because (1) they have been used in Ural-Altaic Languages like Korean as well as Indo-European Languages and (2) the sounds is composed of a bilabial consonant [ b ] and the most unmarked vowel [ a ] or [ ə ].
