The purpose of this study is to construct the theoretical grounds of how significant concept learning in social studies is constructed by reconsidering the psychological necessary conditions and the logical sufficient conditions of social scientific concepts. The researches of concepts in cognitive psychology that have been theoretical grounds of current concept learning in social studies focus mainly on ordinary concepts, but concepts in social studies is scientific. Scientific concepts is abstract generalizations of ordinary concepts that are characterized by experiential generalizations. But Scientific concepts are deeply and significantly constructed when they are connected with ordinary concepts. Pseudo-concept that is characterized by concepts functionally but complexes structurally may take the role that bridge concrete thinking by things and abstract thinking by concepts. Conceptual metaphors that are structurized by metaphorically mapping abstract concepts into concrete objects take the role of link that bridges abstract scientific concepts and concrete ordinary concepts. Scientific abstract concepts have to be metaphorically formed in complementary relation with ordinary concrete concepts. Such method of concept learning make life of students and products of learning meaningfully linked, and guarantees the fundamental purport of concept learning in social studies.

본 연구는 사회과학적 개념의 심리적 필요조건과 논리적 충분조건을 재검토함으로써 학습자에게 유의미한 사회과 개념학습이 어떻게 재구성되어야 하는지에 대해 이론적 토대를 구축하는데 그 목적이 있다. 사회과 개념학습의 이론적 토대가 되고 있는 인지심리학의 개념에 대한 연구는 주로 일상적 개념에 대한 것인데 비해 사회과교육의 개념은 과학적이다. 과학적 개념은 경험적 일반화의 기능을 갖는 일상적 개념에 대한 추상적 일반화이다. 그러나 과학적 개념은 일상적 개념과 병합될 때 깊이 있고 의미 있는 개념형성이 이루어진다. 기능적인 측면에서는 개념적으로 보이지만 구조적인 측면에서는 여전히 복합적인 사고의 형태를 띄고 있는 의사개념은 사물 중심의 구체적인 사고와 개념 중심의 추상적인 사고를 연결시켜주는 연결 고리라고 할 수 있다. 추상적 개념을 구체적 대상에 은유적으로 사상시켜 체계화되어 있는 개념적 은유는 추상적인 과학적 개념과 구체적인 일상적 개념을 연결시키는 고리 역할을 할 수 있다. 사회과학적인 추상적 개념 형성은 일상적인 구체적 개념과의 상보적 관계 속에서 은유적으로 이루어져야 한다. 이러한 개념학습의 방법은 학습자의 삶과 사회과 개념학습의 결과를 유의미하게 연결시켜 주며 또한 사회과에서 추구하는 개념학습의 근본적인 취지를 보장하는 길이 될 것이다.
