Photoprotective Effects of Essence Type Formulation Added with Garlic Extract on UVB-Irradiated Hairless Mice

Ultra violet (UV) B irradiation may induce the acceleration of skin aging. The purpose of this study was to develop an effective essence type formulation added with garlic extract to inhibit UVB induced oxidative damage. The reduced form of gluthathione (GSH) depletion and hydrogen peroxide levels of mice treated with essence type formulation added with garlic extract were similar to those of UVB non-irradiated mice. Also, the mice treated with essence type formulation added with garlic extract had significant (p<.05) decreases in thiobarbituric acid reactive (TBARS) levels by lipid peroxidation compared UVB non-irradiated mice. Our data suggest that this formulation may be effective in protecting skin from UVB photodamage.
