Renaissance humanism has submerged deeply into many areas of the arts and led to iconological interpretations which has imposed sophisticated Zeitgeist and the intellectual landscape of philosophy to Renaissance dress. This gives us a useful point of view for interpreting the intrinsic meaning and symbolic value of Renaissance dress. Fashion was closely linked to the magnificent courtly display of royal authority from the beginning of the modern Renaissance. Renaissance dress was particularly interpreted from a neoplatonic perspective as the essential first step on the path to divinity and can be seen as manifestations of the neoplatonic concept of ideal external beauty linked to inner virtues. From this perspectve, the lavish exterior of Renaissance dress had distinguishing and revolutionary features in accordance with other areas of the arts and social phenomena. The purpose of this study is to analyze and interpret the intrinsic meanings and symbolic value of Renaissance dress through Panofsky’s iconogical interpretation based on social and cultural symptoms and artistic features which reflect the Zeitgeist. On the basis of argumentative demonstration, this paper will offer and propose one of the sublime aesthetic values of dress through Panofsky’s details.

르네상스를 지배한 인본주의 사고는 다양하고 심도있게 미술에 전환되어 고도의 정신성과 철학적인 사유를 요구하는 도상해석학의 출현을 보게 했으며 이는 르네상스시대의 복식에 대한 내재적 가치를 해석하는데 유용한 시각을 제공한다. 근세 르네상스시대의 개막과 함께 나타난 궁정문화와 유행으로서의 패션은 밀접한 관련성을 가진다. 특히, 르네상스시대의 복식의 표현양상은 근대 이후의 서양복식의 미적 표현형식의 원천이 되었으며 현대적 복식 개념으로서 개체성을 부여하였다. 이 같은 관점에서 르네상스시대 복식의 미적 표현양상은 여타 예술과 사회적 상황의 전개에 상응하여 전환적인 혁신의 경향을 띠고 있다. 본 연구는 르네상스시대 궁정복식의 의미와 표현에 있어서 파노프스키의 분석이론 범주를 도입하여 복식에 대한 예술과 문화사적 해석의 계기를 마련하고, 그 의미구조와 상징가치를 이론적으로 해석하였다. 또한 각 요소들의 논증을 토대로 파노프스키의 도상해석학에서 제공하는 이론의 범주를 대입하여 형식적, 주제 요소들을 통해서 그 내적 의미인 복식의 상징적 가치를 해석하였다.
