Design using traditional elements has been actively studied in modern fashion. However, such attempts have not been made in the field of wedding dresses. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze and reflect the trends of modern wedding dresses and develop a wedding dress design with a Korean aesthetic that can be accepted internationally using Tteoksal Patterns (traditional Korean wooden rice cake patterns). Traditional Tteoksal Patterns are natural Korean patterns with a Korean as aesthetic in the form of traditional Korean motifs. Wooden Tteoksal Patterns are particularly combined with plants, animals, geometric shapes and letter patterns. Therefore, they include the beauty of unity, proportion of space, symmetric balance and a sense of rhythm by repetition. Furthermore, Tteoksal Patterns are traditional motifs appropriate for clothing for important ceremonies such as weddings because it symbolizes expression of good wishes to Korean ancestors from the beginning of time. By developing a wedding dress design with the use of these Tteoksal Patterns, this study suggested that it is possible for traditional Korean motifs to be used in wedding dresses to create internationally pleasing designs.

현대패션에서는 전통의 요소를 응용한 디자인 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있으나, 현대패션의 한 분야로서 웨딩드레스 영역에서는 이러한 시도가 이루어지지 않고 있다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 현대 웨딩드레스의 경향을 분석하고 이를 반영하는 가운데 전통 목재 떡살문양을 응용하여 국제적 감각과 한국적 미를 지니는 웨딩드레스 디자인을 개발하는데 있다. 전통 떡살문양은 전통의 모티브로서 한국적 조형미를 지니고 토착화된 우리나라 문양의 집합체이다. 특히 목재 떡살은 식물문, 동물문, 기하문, 문자문 등이 복합적으로 결합되어 통일감, 공간적 비례, 대칭적 조화, 반복에 의한 율동감 등의 조형미가 내재한다. 뿐만 아니라 역사 이래로 때마다 우리 조상들의 기원하는 마음을 담아 표현함으로써, 혼례와 같은 중요의식을 위한 의복을 표현하기에 적절한 전통적 모티브이다. 이러한 전통 목재 떡살을 이용한 현대 웨딩드레스 디자인을 개발함으로써, 한국적이면서도 국제적 감각을 지닌 전통적 모티브가 웨딩드레스 디자인에 부합될 수 있다는 가능성을 제시하였다.
