Reflecting the spirit of its own age, every culture can be classified according to religious, political, economic and social factors. There are some ideas or principles which can't change through all time that have led to development of aesthetics. As a classicist says, "Harmony of the world is apparently marked by forms and figures…", every aesthetic phenomenon can be construed as shapes and mathematical relations. In other words, works of art through all ages, cultural product, can be analyzed according to formative shapes and mathematical principles. which can improve some concrete and new ideas. Finally, it can provide a new formativeness with emotional cognition. Therefore, the present paper is concerned with investigating formative characteristics of Korean Knots from the point of view of traditional forms and mathematical principles, and exploring probabilities that Korean Knots can combine. This paper is theoretically analysed a concept and examined a definition, an origin and a history of Korean Knots. In addition, it is investigated characteristics on elements of Korean knots by using the ideas of visual elements of forms and mathematical fundamentals The conclusion provided above can be briefly stated as follows. First, the Korean Knot, which is the artwork developed from the beginning of the history of human culture, had been completed the form of knot in the age of the Three States and has been utilized for decorative purposes in the Koryo and Joseon Dynasty. Second, the traditional knot consists of galloon, knot and tassel. There are about 38 kinds among these knots, which are difference between royal and folk, and central and local. Third, the factor that forms and figures are basic elements to make up all of patterns, can apply to the Korean Knot. Fourth, traditional knots are being combined diversly and recreated in free-form by using forms and figures. Based on the foregoing result, combining formative aesthetics of the Korean Traditional Knot Pattern and applying to development of design, we could utilize the ideas as significant resources in developing some modern designs with korean sensitivity.

문화적 산물에는 그 시대만의 독특한 시대성을 띠고 있으며 우리는 그 당시대의 종교적ㆍ정치적ㆍ경제적ㆍ사회적인 복합적 요소에 의해 독창적인 특징이 형성된다. 또한 어느 시대에서도 변하지 않는 고정된 개념과 원리가 존재하며, 그것에 따라 새로운 미적 현상이 발전되어 왔다고 볼 수 있다. “세계의 조화는 형태와 수에 명백하게 드러나 있으며… 다시 웬트워스 톰프슨(D'arcy Wentworth Thompson: 1860-1948), 스코틀랜드의 동물학자, 고전학자. ”라고 한 어느 고전학자의 말처럼 미적 현상의 조화는 모든 산물은 형태와 수학적 관계들로 분석할 수 있다. 즉, 각 시대의 예술품 즉 문화적 산물은 조형적 형태와 수학적 원리에 따라 분석하여 구체적인 새로운 시각의 개념을 재고할 수 있으며 나아가 감성적 인식의 새 조형성을 제시할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 우리 고유의 공예품인 한국 매듭을 선정하여 전통매듭의 조형적 특징을 전체적인 형태와 수학적 원리의 관점에서 접근하여 분석하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 방법은 매듭의 정의와 한국 매듭의 역사를 고찰하고자 하며, 한국 매듭의 구성요소의 특징을 살펴보고 매듭에서 보여지는 조형형태의 시각적 요소와 數의 원리를 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 매듭은 인류문화의 시작과 함께 발전해온 뿌리 깊은 조형물로서, 한국 매듭은 삼국시대부터 매듭의 형태가 완성되었으며 고려시대와 조선시대에는 장식적인 용도로서 널리 사용되어 왔다. 둘째, 전통매듭은 끈목, 매듭, 술의 구성요소를 가지고 있는데 매듭은 약 38종이며 궁중과 민간, 지방에 따라 명칭의 차이가 있다. 셋째, 形과 數는 자연의 모든 패턴의 가장 기초가 되는 요소로서 한국 매듭에도 적용하여 새로운 조형성을 살펴 볼 수 있었다. 이상의 연구 결과로 얻은 한국 매듭의 외적 조형성은 한국의 독특한 감성적 문화자료로서 활용할 수 있으리라 사료된다.
