This research aims at finding out the truth that epitaph of Buddhist monks accepted wholeheartedly the heroic birth folk tales from a previous generation and figuring out characteristics of religious beliefs from it. For this, the writer looked through the literary tradition and types of birth folk tales briefly and thought that epitaph of Buddhist monks accepted the type of heroic narrative novel and made a change in dreaming of the forthcoming conception of a baby and the origin of hero existence. It was verified that birth-folk tales of Buddhist monks epitaph or development of the narration and these works like in , Buddhist tales in , and were different through the result of analyzing 10 volume of Buddhist monks epitaph. However, it was verified that influenced by epitaph of Buddhist monks in Shinar era had a similar birth-folk tale and narration development of heroic narrative novel or epitaph. This characteristic was passed down to the epitaph of Koryo dynasty that Buddhism flourished or Joseon dynasty that Buddhism declined. Religious beliefs appeared in the birth-folk tales of epitaph were different from the early Buddhist tales of Korea or Japan. It is different from the essay that monks wrote calmly a religious enlightenment from their experience of the daily life. The early Buddhist tale showed that it fronted out with the traditional divinity and revealed the great power o f Buddhism or monks. Buddhist law of being monks and religious insight as a monk were focused in epitaph of Buddhist monks. But, Confucian scholar brought a noteworthy thing among birth folk tale and monk’s whereabouts and described his Buddhist religious insight in epitaph of Buddhist monks.

이 글은 고승 비문이 전대의 영웅설화 출생담을 적극적으로 수용하고 있다는 점을 밝히고, 거기서 도출되는 종교관의 특징을 드러내는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 필자는 출생담의 문학적 전통과 유형을 대략적으로 살펴보고, 고승 비문이 영웅설화의 유형을 수용하면서 태몽이나 주인공의 존재본원에 약간의 변화를 주고 있다고 보았다. 자료집에 있는 10편의 고승 비문을 분석해 본 결과 고승 비문의 출생담이나 서사전개 방식은 『삼국사기』<열전>이나 『삼국유사』속 불교설화, 그리고 『수이전』이나 본격적인 승전에 해당되는 『해동고승전』과 다른 점이 확인 된다. 그러나 신라시대 고승 비문의 영향을 받은 것으로 보이는 혁연정의 『균여전』에서는 영웅설화나 고승 비문과 흡사한 출생담과 서사전개 방식이 확인되었다. 그리고 이러한 특징은 불교가 융성했던 고려시대나 쇠퇴했던 조선시대 고승 비문에서도 그대로 전승된다. 이러한 고승 비문 출생담에 나타난 종교관은 한국이나 일본의 초기 불교설화들과 달랐다. 그리고 일부 출가한 스님들이 자신의 일상적 체험에서 얻은 종교적 깨달음을 담담하게 기술한 수필들과도 다르다. 한국이나 일본의 초기 불교설화들은 재래 신격과 대결하면서 불교와 신승들의 권능을 드러내는 종교관이 나타난다. 이에 비해 고승 비문에서는 고승이 승려가 될 수밖에 없는 불교적 연기 법칙과 승려로서의 삶 후에 얻게 되는 종교적 통찰에 주안점이 있다. 또 고승 비문은 유학자들이 고승들의 출생담과 행적 중에서 특기할 만한 것을 부각시키고, 그 과정이나 말미에서 고승의 불교적, 종교적 통찰을 그리고 있다는 점에서 특징이 있다.
