The purpose of this study revolves around the presentation of a methodology regarding how to preach Proverbs. For this, our first attention has been devoted to the previous interpretations of the book of Proverbs in terms of the following three angles: author, reader, and text. The angle of author in interpretation of the Proverbs has aimed at an exploration of who was the author of a text and what were its historical backgrounds in an effort to cull out the meaning of the text. This attempt reveals the weakness that it has very few to contribute to delivering the messages of Proverbs on the pulpit. On the other hand, an emphasis on the angle of reader in studies of the Proverbs entails that the interpretation of the Proverbs can be influenced under the subjective judgment of the reader in reaching the meaning of text. With these observations in mind, our study attempts to validate the claim that preaching Proverbs should be conducted by attending to the text itself. Especially, this study focuses its attention on the text in line with the recent trend which presupposes a unity behind the arrangement of the sayings in the book of Proverbs. In other words, this work argues that the sayings as they stand in the book of Proverbs were canonically shaped to constitute a coherent whole. It goes on to emphasize that for the preaching of a proverb (or saying), the preacher should demarcate a unit of which the proverb forms a part, and then explore a rhetorical structure of the unit. Such procedures facilitate the preacher to make sermon subjects richer. After this, the preacher is enabled to connect his sermon subjects to the overarching theme of Proverbs, that is, the theme of builidng up of a community, because the wisdom as presented in the Proverbs is defined as a harmonious relationship on the part of a human with the community as well as God.

본 연구는 오늘날 교회 강단에서 도외시되는 잠언 설교를 위해서 설교 방법론을 제시하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 기존의 잠언 해석들을 저자, 독자, 그리고 본문이라는 세 가지 축에서 조명했다. 저자의 축은 잠언 경구들 배후에 있는 저자와 그가 속해 있는 역사적 배경을 추적하는 방식을 통해 잠언의 경구들의 의미를 어떻게 파헤치려고 했는지를 고찰하는 것이다. 저자의 역사적 배경에 대한 관심은 잠언 해석에서 많은 유익한 점을 낳았지만 다른 한편으로 설교자에게 별로 유익을 주지 못했다는 단점이 있다. 한편 독자의 축은 잠언 해석을 독자의 주관적인 판단에서 잠언 경구들을 해석한다는 약점이 있다. 이런 상황에서 본 연구는 잠언 설교를 위한 경구 해석은 기본적으로 본문 자체에 대한 연구를 통해서 이루어져야 한다고 주장했다. 본문 자체에 관심을 둔 설교 방법론도 두 갈래가 있다. 하나는 잠언에 나오는 경구들을 주위 문맥과 상관없이 개별적으로 이해하고 그것을 강단에서 선포하는 방식이다. 다른 하나는 잠언의 경구들을 주위의 문맥의 관점에서 해석하는 방식이다. 오늘날 잠언 해석은 후자의 방식에 많은 관심을 가지고 있다. 즉 잠언의 경구들을 따로 따로 해석할 것이 아니라 그 경구들이 속한 단락의 경계를 정하고 그 단락 속에서 경구들을 의미를 파헤치려는 시도이다. 이런 시도는 자칫 주관적 흐름으로 치우칠 수 있는 잠언 설교를 문맥이라는 방패막이를 통해 객관적으로 경구들의 의미를 전달할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 더 나아가 오늘날 잠언 연구는 단락의 경계 속에서 그 단락 안에 수사적 구조에 주목한다. 본 연구는 이런 새로운 잠언 연구의 경향에 맞추어서 잠언 설교도 단락의 경계를 정하고 수사적 구조를 밝히는 방식으로 전개된다면 더 풍요로운 설교 대지를 청중들에게 제시할 수 있다고 주장했다. 그리고 잠언의 전체적 지혜는 공동체를 세우는 데에 있다는 것을 관찰하고 그런 관점에서 잠언의 메시지가 전달되어야 한다고 강조했다.
