This study explores the current phenomenon of worship and culture in South Korean Protestant churches. Since the 1960s, worship within Protestant Korean churches has undergone change that corresponds to that of Korea's cultural transition post war. Changes within worship can be categorized into four main groups: Liturgical worship and Korean traditional worship which emphasizes the Lord's Supper and the traditional values and elements, contemporary cultural worship and blended worship which emphasize amen and praise, the generational worship and the professional worship which emphasize efficiency, and finally, the emerging worship and the cross-generational worship which emphasize communal participation. These groups are influenced by the various worship-reforming movements in the world, such as the ecumenical and evangelical movement in the mid twenty-century, the sacred canopy of the second Vatican Council, the charismatic movement, the seekers worship, and the emerging worship. G. Wainwright's typology of worship and culture, Nairobi Statement of the Lutheran Church, and the 1997 Report of the Reformed Church help to place these worship phenomenon within the context of some cultural perspectives. The conflict and misunderstanding that occurs in rapid worship transition can be solved with the following three theological explanations, the definition of worship, the purpose of worship. A definition of worship that includes the understanding, theology, and character of worship is suggested. That is, 'worship is the time when the covenant people, called by God, gather together to glorify God by participating in word, sacrament, prayer, and praise led by the Holy Spirit, and to present in advance the Kingdom of God with the fruits of life as one body of Christ.' Because there is often conflicting goals within worshipping congregations, it is suggested that the sanctification of congregation as goal of worship is equal to God's glorification. In this way, we recognize the various worship transition phenomenon as thechallenge we face in common. and attempt to discuss it by finding a common language. Additionally, we confirm that each worship group has their own worship tradition and authenticity.

이 연구는 1960년대에서부터 포스트모던 사회에 이르기까지 문화 변혁에 따라 기독교예배가 변화해온 상황을 현상학적 관점으로 관찰하고 규명하면서 다극화된 한국 기독교 예배를 통전적으로 해석할 수 있는 예배와 문화에 대한 이해를 제시하는 목적을 가지고 있다. 이 연구는 현대교회의 예배 상황을 넷으로 구분하여 관찰하는 것으로 시작한다. 즉 전통의 가치를 세우며 성찬을 강조하는 예전적 예배와 한국전통문화적 예배, 아멘과 찬양을 강조하는 현대문화적 예배와 융합 예배, 효율성을 강조하는 세대별 및 전문화 예배, 공동체적 참여를 바탕으로 한 이머징 예배 및 세대 통합 예배다. 이러한 한국교회 예배 변화는 세계교회의 예배 변화의 흐름을 따른 것으로 20세기 중반의 교회일치운동 및 복음주의 운동, 제2바티칸공의회의 예전헌장, 은사주의 운동, 구도자예배에서부터 최근 이머징 예배가 바로 그것이다. 웨인 라이트의 문화 유형론, 루터교의 나이로비 선언문, 개혁교회의 1997년 보고서는 예배변화를 문화적 관점에서 이해하도록 돕는다. 예배 변화로 인해 발생하는 갈등과 대립은 다음 두 가지, 즉 예배정의와 예배목적에 대한 신학적 진술로 서로의 입장을 이해하고 수용할 수 있을 것이다. 이 모든 예배들의 예배 이해와 신학, 그리고 성격을 하나의 예배 정의로 규정해본다. 즉, ‘예배란 하나님의 부르심을 받은 이들이 함께 모여 성령으로 말씀, 성례전, 기도, 찬양에 참여함으로 하나님께 영광을 드리며, 그리스도의 몸의 지체로서 삶의 열매를 가지고 하나님 나라를 미리 나타내는 시간이다’를 제시한다. 예배의 목표로서 인간의 성화가 하나님 영광과 동등한 위치로 재설정할 필요가 있음을 강조한다. 예배의 목표로서 하나님 영광과 인간의 성화를 중요도와 우선순위로 구분하는 것보다 함께 논의하는 것은 성경이 하나님께 영광과 인간의 성숙의 관계를 더욱 직접적으로 관련시키고 있기 때문이다. 이와 같이 각각의 예배들을 문화 패러다임과 신학적 이해로 재해석함으로 다양한 예배 변화를 보편적 교회의 공통 과제로 인식하고, 함께 논의를 하기 위한 공동의 언어를 찾아본다. 또한 각각의 예배들에 고유의 예전 전통과 문화의 진정성이 있음을 확인한다.
