The backgrounds of the growth of Korea Church include the emergence of charismatic leaders and larger churches to help small churches and expansion of church’s missions for society in addition to the economic growth. At the same time, larger churches full of missionary enthusiasm have sent many missionaries to foreign countries to provide missionary enthusiasm. The reinforcement of religious faith for relief and shamanism furnace fueled physical complacency and materialism as materialism penetrated into churches. Church individualism was formed by church leaders’ love of fame, and mass production and materialism led churches to social polarization by making the rich-get-rich and the poor-get-poorer. The polarization of churches gave birth to divisions, factionalism, regionalism, and academic elitism, which turned away young people. And therefore people who are destitute and neglected got to condemn the churches. Statistically speaking, the increasing rate of the number of church members also evidently diminished. Hence pastors are becoming more interested in the growth of Korean churches. The movement of church development found a key answer from model case of Xinyang Church, “MS 4step training course” to induce and train new members and volunteers. The model case was “to foster true volunteers who make people live and develop” with lay servants and pillars of the church. In other words, the procurement of leadership of the trained lay workers to work themselves was the engine of the growth factors of the churches. Additionally it was already experienced in the Western churches that the church-centered principle of growth away from real life and culture did not help in the church growth. Now therefore, the leadership of the community shall be procured in the local society by “build the kingdom of God movement” which pastor Lee Mangyu claimed through a variety of programs for the community. However in the past the Church of South Korea had a strong dualistic tendency to deny God’s creative universal life in the dualistic structure ‘church and society.’ So, naturally more emphasis was put on personal salvation, and the church’s social responsibility and life were denied. So universal life of Christians today shall not be denied and it shall be sublimated to God’s creative life. We need to have interest in fundamental and universal human life in line with the problems of elderly due to aging rapidly, foreign workers, the homeless, and refugees.

한국교회 성장요인의 배경에는 경제성장과 더불어 카리스마적 지도자들의 출현, 등으로 대형 교회들이 출현하여 소형교회를 돕는 일, 대사회적인 교회사명을 감당하는데 앞장서 왔던 것으로 집약 할 수 있다. 동시에 선교적 열정이 고조되어 해외로 많은 선교사를 파송하여 대교회들은 선교적 열정에 힘을 쏟았다. 그러나 물질주의가 교회에 침투하면서 기복신앙이 강해져서 신앙의 샤머니즘화로 말미암은 육신의 안일과 물질주의를 부채질하게 되었다. 동시에 지도자들의 공명화로 개교회주의가 형성되었고, 대량화과 물질주의는 빈익빈 부익부의 교회를 양산하여 사회적 양극화로 이어졌고, 더불어 교회의 양극화로 인한 분열과 파벌주의, 지역주의, 학벌주의를 낳게 하여 교회는 뜻있는 젊은이들을 외면하기에 이르렀고, 소외계층에게는 교회가 지탄의 대상이 되어진 것이다. 또한 통계적으로 보면 교인 수에 있어서 성장률의 감소가 뚜렷하게 나타나고 있다. 그러므로 한국교회 성장에 대한 관심이 목회자들에게 높아져가고 있다. 이에 교회 성장운동은 신양교회를 모범으로 하여 사례를 「MS 4steps 평신도 훈련과정」을 개발하여 신입교인을 양성, 평신도 봉사자와 교회의 기둥으로 “사람을 살리고 세우는 참된 봉사자를 육성”하는 것에서 그 해답을 찾았다. 다시 말하면 훈련 받은 평신도 사역자들이 스스로 사역할 수 있는 리더십을 확보하는 것이 교회성장의 동력요인이 되었다. 또한 현실의 삶과 문화와 동떨어져 가는 교회중심의 교회성장주의는 교회성장에 저해된다는 것을 서구교회를 통하여 이미 체험하였다. 그러므로 이제는 사회적 삶 속에서 지역사회에 대한 다양한 프로그램을 통하여 이만규 목사가 주장하는 「하나님 나라 세우기 운동」으로 지역사회의 지도력을 확보하는 것이다. 그러나 과거 한국교회는 ‘교회와 사회’의 이중구조 속에서 하나님의 창조적 보편적 삶을 부정하는 이원론적 성향이 강했다. 그래서 자연히 개인구원을 강조하게 되었고, 교회의 사회적 책임과 삶을 부정하였던 것이다. 그래서 오늘 그리스도인들의 보편적인 삶을 부정하지 말고 하나님의 창조적 삶으로 승화시켜야 할 것이다. 노령화로 인한 노인문제, 외국인 노동자 문제, 노숙자, 탈북자, 등의 인간의 기본적 삶과 보편적 삶에 관심을 가져야 한다.
