This paper explores the limitations and possibilities of a sociobiological approaches in environmental ethics. The characteristics of the evolutionary ethics' and sociobiology’s approaches which constitute a theoretical basis for the Callicott's environmental ethics are identified in this paper. Then there is an argument that what stance environmental ethics which accepts the sociobiological approach takes on the issues about the value in and the duty to nature. And there is a concern about the possibility of overlooking a naturalistic fallacy, egoism or collectivism in that evolutionary ethics accepts the ethical choices – with the kin altruism, the reciprocal altruism, and the emotions or intimacy – as justifiable though evolutionary ethics based on sociobiology attempts to combine biological facts with moral values. Despite this limitation, however, environmental ethics based on sociobiology can serve the establishment of the moral standard with practicality and reasonableness. Furthermore, environmental ethics is persuasive in that it puts emphasis on the moral duty to nature by expanding the existing human ethics, then it might make a valuable contribution towards overcoming the ecological crisis today.

본 글은 사회생물학적 관점에서 자연의 가치와 자연에 대한 도덕적 의무의 문제를 탐색한 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 환경윤리학의 이론적 토대를 구성하고 있는 도덕 감정에 대한 진화론적 윤리학과 사회생물학의 접근방식은 어떤 성격을 띠고 있는지 규명한다. 그리고 자연의 가치와 자연에 대한 의무의 문제에 대해 사회생물학적 접근방식을 수용하고 있는 환경윤리학이 어떤 입장을 취하고 있는지 논의한다. 진화론적 윤리학과 사회생물학에 기초한 캘리콧의 환경윤리학은 생물학적 사실과 도덕적 가치의 결합을 시도하지만 자연주의의 오류로부터 완전히 자유롭지는 못하고, 혈연 이타주의와 호혜적 이타주의, 그리고 감정이나 친밀감에 따른 윤리적 선택을 정당한 것으로 수용한다는 점에서 이기주의나 집단 이기주의를 묵인할 우려가 있다. 그러나 이러한 한계에도 불구하고 사회생물학에 기초한 환경윤리학은 사회생물학적 사실을 바탕으로 현실적이고 합리적인 도덕규범을 정립하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 그리고 그것은 기존의 인간 윤리를 확장하여 자연에 대한 도덕적 의무를 강조한다는 점에서 설득력이 있으며, 오늘날의 심각한 생태학적 위기를 극복하는 데 크게 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
