This study investigated the effects of factors such as stress, self-esteem, depression, family bond and social support on the suicide ideation of police officers, which have hardly been researched so far. To meet this end, police officers, who were getting trained at the police academy and police university were surveyed and analysed. Demographically, it was found that officers in their 50s had significantly more suicide ideation than officers in other age groups, and officers with high school education had more suicide ideation, and lieutenants had more suicide ideation than officers in other ranks. To find out the effects of independent variables on suicide ideation, they were put in steps for multi-regression analysis. It was found that the effects of stress and self-esteem were not statistically significant. And, even though family bond and social support have more impact than stress and self-esteem, they were found to have insignificant effect as well. However, gender and depression were found to have statistically significant effect on suicide ideation. These findings suggest that depression is the most important factor for police officers in affecting the suicide ideation as for adolescents and elderlies. And it has been suggested that the police should employ mental health experts that they find out mental problems in early stages and provide appropriate counseling and therapy accordingly, and that middle-class managers should be empowered and voice-hearing of the field should be strengthened through internet opinion sections so that the requests and voices of the field can be delivered effectively to senior managers to boost up the spirits of the middle-class management.

이 연구에서는 그동안 거의 연구되지 않았던 경찰공무원의 자살생각과 이에 영향을 미치는 변인들을 알아보기 위하여 스트레스, 자아존중감, 우울감, 가족적응력, 사회적 지지를 독립변수로 설정하고 종속변수인 자살생각에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보았다. 이를 위해 경찰교육원과 경찰대학에서 교육을 받고 있는 경찰관을 상대로 설문조사 실시한 후 이를 분석하였다. 조사 결과 인구사회학적 특성별로는, 우선 50대가 다른 연령대에 비해서 유의미하게 자살생각을 더 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 밖에도 고졸자가 전문대 또는 대졸자에 비해 자살생각을 더 많이 하였으며, 다른 계급에 비해 경위가 통계적으로 유의미하게 자살생각을 더 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 독립변수들이 자살생각에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위하여 이 변수들을 순차적으로 투입한 다중회귀분석결과, 스트레스와 자존감은 독립변수에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 또한 가족응집력과 사회적 지지는 종속변수에 다른 변수들보다 큰 영향을 미치기는 하였지만 역시 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 반면에 성별과 우울감은 자살생각에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 청소년이나 노인의 자살생각에 관한 연구에서와 마찬가지로 경찰공무원에게서도 우울이 자살생각에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 요인이라는 점을 알려주는 것이라고 할 것이다. 그리고 이 연구결과를 토대로 이 연구에서는 정신건강 전문가를 두어서 경찰공무원들의 정신건강상 문제를 조기에 발견하고, 거기에 맞는 적절한 상담과 치료가 이루어지도록 할 것과 중간관리층의 사기앙양을 위해 현장감독자에 대하여 과감하게 권한을 위임하고, 현장의 목소리와 요구사항이 상부에 잘 전달될 수 있도록 인터넷 대화방 등을 통한 현장의견수집 기능을 강화하는 등의 방안을 마련할 것을 제안하였다.
