The objective of this study is to explain why we should find ways to converge the disciplines through consilience and to search for the role of social studies education to achieve it. Consilience education aims to make the learners come up with the values and develop the attitudes that transcend the domains of natural sciences, Humanities and social sciences. And it emphasizes the role of Social Studies as the guidance for scientific discovery and its utilization. This study suggests that which way the consilient Social Studies should go to achieve this goal and to be faithful to its role. Firstly, Social Studies textbook and lessons should include the learning contents that deal with the correlation between scientific technology and social changes concretely. Secondly, there should be activities for evaluation and verification of social-political-economic effects which decide the orientation of scientific technology development. Thirdly, there should be the courses teaching the value of social changes which the development of scientific technology will bring in the future. Fourthly, there should be a technological civil rights education that harmonizes the scientific technology ability and the society regulation ability.

본 연구는 ‘통섭’을 통한 학문간 통합의 필요성을 설명하고 그 안에서 사회과가 담당해야 할 역할을 탐색하는 것에 주안점을 두었다. 통섭교육은 단순한 내용적 통합이 아니라 자연과학, 인문학, 사회과학의 영역을 초월하는 가치의 사고와 태도의 학습을 지향하며, 그 안에서 사회과는 ‘과학적 발견과 활용의 철학’으로서의 역할하여야 함을 논증하였으며, 2012년 개정 교육과정을 토대로 통섭적 사회과 교육을 실천하기 위한 방안을 제안하였다. 제안의 주 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 과학기술과 사회변동의 연관성을 구체적으로 다룰 수 있는 내용 요소가 교과서와 실제 수업 내용 요소에 포함되어야 한다. 둘째, 과학기술 발달의 동인으로 작동하고 있는 사회-정치-경제적 영향을 평가하고 검증하는 학습활동들이 필요하다. 셋째, 과학기술의 발달이 가져올 사회적 변화에 대한 가치 교육이 필요하다. 넷째, 과학기술 능력과 사회조절 능력을 조화시킬 수 있는 ‘과학기술시민권’교육이 필요하다.
