Generally, refinement has been done for ‘top-down’, ‘one-sidedly’ and ‘heteronomously’. By the way, refinement from July 12th, 2004 to September 6th, 2011 has been considered as breaking from the convention by the new method which netizen themselves directly participated in the process of suggestion and selection of refined words. As a result, it changed the way of the old refinement into ‘bottom-up’, ‘both-sidedly’ and ‘autonomously’ and produced 299 refined words. However, I think that there are several problems in those refined words, especially in morphosemantic aspects. ‘Equality in meaning’, ‘semantic paradigmatic relation’, ‘figurative usage’, ‘argument relation’, and ‘evaluation’ are the detailed problems in semantic aspects. ‘Wordhood’, ‘morphological paradigmatic relation’, ‘relation between head and non-head’, and ‘participation in word-formation of irregular root’ are the detailed problems in morphological aspects. I expect that these detailed problems in morphosemantic aspects show the necessity of complementary measures and can be also regarded as concrete criteria in the process of refinement.

그동안 순화는 하향적, 일방적, 타율적으로 진행되어 왔으나 2004년 7월 12일부터 2011년 12월 6일까지는 이러한 방식에서 탈피하여 순화어 후보 제안에서부터 선정에 이르기까지 국 민들이 직접 참여하는 상향적, 쌍방향적, 자율적인 방식으로 전환되어 모두 299개의 순화어가 제시된 바 있다. 이들 순화어들은 언중들의 언어 의식을 반영하고 있다는 점에서 긍정적인 측 면이 적지 않지만 언어학적으로 고찰하면 아쉬운 부분도 적지 않다. 이에 따라 본고에서는 이 들 순화어 299개를 대상으로 형태의미론적으로 고찰하여 문제점을 도출하고 나름대로의 대안 을 제시하고자 하였다. 의미론적 측면에서는 ‘의미상의 등가성’, ‘의미적 계열 관계’, ‘비유적 용법’, ‘논항 관계’, ‘가치평가’로, 형태론적 측면에서는 ‘단어성’, ‘형태적 계열 관계’, ‘핵과 비핵 의 관계’, ‘불규칙적 어근의 단어 형성 참여’로 나누어 순화어의 문제점과 대안을 제시하였다. 경우에 따라서는 하나의 순화어가 이들 가운데 복수의 측면에서 문제점을 가지고 있는 것도 있었음을 아울러 언급하였다. 국립국어원에서 2012년부터 순화어를 확정하는 단계에서는 문 인, 언론인, 국어학자 등으로 구성된 말다듬기위원회에서 결정하는 방식으로 전환한다고 밝힌 것은 ‘새로운 방식의 순화’인 국민 참여형 순화가 가지는 문제점을 인식한 데 따른 것으로 평 가된다. 본고를 통해 언급된 순화어의 형태의미론적 제 측면들이 앞으로의 지속적이고 효율적 인 순화 과정에 있어 구체적이고도 실질적인 기준으로 활용되기를 기대한다.
