In urbanized, technologized, and industrialized society, we have been isolated from the natural environment and destroying it with loss of dignity for Mother Nature. Contemporary artists, as a reflection of environmental problems, demonstrated a strong relationship with nature by depicting both aesthetic awareness of nature and an awareness of environmental concerns. Andy Goldsworthy, who is known as a land artist collaborating with nature, uses natural resources as an art material based on sensory experiences in nature. Therefore, by exploring Andy Goldsworthy's artworks and art-making process, we can gain knowledge that can inform art education practice and inspire new art education curricula that embrace environmental issues. In this context, we present an ecological art education program using distal photography based on understanding of Andy Goldsworthy' art works and art-making process. This pedagogical practice blend creative art making with digital photography and sensory experiences in nature. As selectivity, instantaneity, credibility, and play feature in digital photography, it stimulates students' intrinsic motivation and helps them to fully engage in the art project. In conclusion, through this ecological art project using digital photography, students could cultivate environmental awareness and an affinity toward nature, and acting on their own moral reasoning about the wise stewardship of the earth.

현대인은 도시화, 산업화, 정보화로 인해 자연과 괴리된 채 살아가며, 자연에 대한 무지와 무관심으로 환경의 파괴를 서슴지 않는다. 이에 인간의 자연성 회복을 위한 노력의 일환으로 미술계에서는 자연에 대한 새로운 시각을 부여하고자 하는 움직임이 일어났다. 앤디 골드워시(Andy Goldsworthy)는 자연과의 협응을 통해 작품을 제작하는 대표적인 대지미술 작가로서 자연물, 자연환경, 그리고 자연현상을 이용하여 자연의 미적 가치를 재해석함과 동시에 자연 환경에 대한 새로운 인식과 관심을 불러일으킨다. 그의 작품과 제작 과정은 자연을 탐색하고, 이해하며 교감을 나누는 경험을 통해 자연의 생명력을 체험하고 환경의식을 형성하는데 도움을 준다는 점에서 교육적 의의를 가진다. 이에 본고에서는 디지털 사진을 활용한 생태 미술교육으로서 앤디 골드워시의 작품을 기반으로 한 미술교육 프로젝트를 제안, 적용하였다. 학생들은 자연 속에서 일정시간 관조와 향유하는 시간을 가지며 자연과 소통을 하고, 자연이 제공하는 가치를 오감을 통해 체험한 후 자연스럽게 주변의 유기물을 활용하여 미적인 구성을 시도하였다. 그 결과, 학생들은 감각체험을 통해 자연에 대한 이해와 감성을 일깨우고 환경지식을 형성하며 자연환경에 대한 관심과 애정을 형성하는 등 유의미한 관계를 형성하였다.
