As multicultural phenomena causes a lot of social issues, diaspora, which indicates global immigrants around the world, has become a popular term. The purpose of this study is to examine the possible development of cultural identity through a multicultural art education program, focusing on diaspora artists Paik Nam Jun and Lee Ufan. The artworks of Paik Nam Jun and Lee Ufan could especially help student understand the development of diasporas’ cultural identification. According to James Banks, students should develop a delicate balance of reflective cultural, national, and global identifications. Based on Banks’s stage of cultural identity theory, a multicultural art education program is developed to help students enhance their identity within their cultural communities and countries. To achieve the purpose of this study, this study takes the methodology of action research. An art teacher, along with professors, collaborated in the design of the procedure for teaching “Me, My Space, My Community, My Country and My World.” The teacher taught three sections to ninth grade students in a middle school. From this action research, we can conclude that students' cultural identities develop gradually or rapidly through the analysis of artworks and interviews.

본 연구는 이산(離散)을 겪는 “디아스포라”에 대한 논의를 다문화 미술교육을 통한 문화 정체성의 성장 가능성에 중점을 두고, 디아스포라 작가인 백남준과 이우환을 통해 고찰한다. 한국 작가로서 세계적 명성을 얻은 백남준과 이우환의 정체성 형성과 변화과정은 다문화 미술교육에서 문화정체성 함양에 대한 가능성과 방향을 제시할 수 있다. 본 연구는 뱅크스(J. A. Banks)가 학습자의 성찰적이고 명료화된 문화적, 국가적, 세계적 정체성으로의 단계적이고 균형적인 발전이 교사에 의해 가능하다고 본 과정을 전제로 한다. 뱅크스의 문화 정체성 발달이론을 이론적 배경으로 하여 학생들의 문화 정체성 변화와 성장을 도모하는데 중점을 두고 다문화미술교육 프로그램을 개발․적용하여 분석하기 위해 본 연구는 실행연구(action research)의 방법을 사용하였다. 이러한 연구방법을 통하여 학생들의 문화적 정체성은 단계적 혹은 비약적으로 발전하였음을 작품결과 분석 및 심층 면담, 그리고 자료 분석을 통하여 도출하였다.
