Establishing ecologically comprehensive, well managed protected area (PA) systems is the cornerstones in most biodiversity conservation effort and widely accepted as a foundation strategy to save the biodiversity. The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is the largest assembly of data on the world’s terrestrial and marine Protected Areas and it is used to report on the UN Millennium Development Goals, progress of Aichi Biodiversity Targets of CBD and so on. Recognising the increasing importance of improving the quality of the WDPA, this study aims to review current WDPA dataset for Korea PA data so as to improve the quality and accuracy of data, further to provide detailing lessons learned and recommendations with respect to the data review process and the content of national WDPA data. Totally 277 datasets of protected areas in Korea, covered 10 types of protected areas, were reviewed mainly focusing on 8 core data fields and spatial data. As a result of this study, most of errors of reviewed WDPA were fully corrected in partnership with UNEP-WCMC. However, current WDPA dataset does not fully represent an accurate picture of the protected areas in Korea, especially small sites such as wildlife protected areas and special islands. Based on the results of this study, the following is recommended; · Fill the gaps in the existing WDPA considering various categories and governance types of protected areas in Korea according with IUCN PA definition; · Raise the awareness of potential protected areas that have conservation values but are not yet protected by relevant law; · Connect WDPA with monitoring and reporting systems such as Management Effectiveness Evaluation; · Encourage integration of PA data management at a national scale.

생태적 포괄성을 지닌 잘 관리되고 있는 보호지역 시스템은 생물다양성 보전 노력의 핵심이며 생물다양성 보 전 전략의 기초로 인식되고 있다. 세계보호지역데이터베이스(이하 WDPA)는 전 세계 육상과 해양 보호지역을 아우르 는 가장 큰 자료구축 시스템으로 UN 밀레니엄발전목표(MDGs)와 생물다양성협약의 Aichi 생물다양성 목표 등을 평가 하는 보고서의 기초자료로 사용된다. 본 연구는 WDPA 질(質) 개선의 중요성에 대한 인식이 증가함에 따라, 현재 WDPA 에 등록된 한국 자료를 검토하여 자료의 질과 정확성을 개선하고, 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 향후 WDPA에 자료 제공시 자료의 내용 및 자료 검토과정에 대한 세부사항을 제안하는데 목적이 있다. 위를 위해 세계보호지역데이터베이스에 등 록된 한국의 총 277개소, 10개 유형의 보호지역 자료를 8개 핵심사항과 공간자료를 중심으로 검토하였다. 이번 연구결 과 UNEP-WCMC와의 협력을 통해 검토된 WDPA 한국 자료의 오류는 수정되었다. 그러나 현재 WDPA 자료는 한국의 전체 보호지역을 대표하고 있지 못하며, 특히 야생생물보호구역 특정도서와 같이 규모가 작은 보호지역을 충분히 반영 하지 못하고 있다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 다음사항을 제안한다. − IUCN의 보호지역 정의에 부합하는 한국의 보호지역 을 다양한 카테고리 및 거버넌스 유형을 고려하여 현재 WDPA 격차 해소. −현재 법정 보호지역이 아니지만 보전 가치 를 지닌 잠재적 보호지역에 대한 인식 증진. −관리효과성평과와 같은 모니터링 및 보고시스템을 세계보호지역데이터 베이스와 연결. −국가 차원의 통합적 보호지역 자료 관리 장려
