The purpose of this study was to examine in-service physical education teachers’ culturally relevant teaching practice in elementary schools. This study was a qualitative case study, which examined a purposefully selected three in-service teachers from different schools. Data was collected through interviews and participant observations. The content analysis guided the data analysis. Findings suggested that the participants thought the following five aspects were important in successful teaching culturally diverse students: (1) sport as universal language, (2) promotion of positive student identity development through sports, (3) passion for physical education, (4) patience in teaching diverse students, and (5) building a good relationship with students. In conclusion, physical education teachers in the current study demonstrated appropriate culturally relevant teaching practice in many different ways with limited practice in sociopolitical consciousness category.

본 사례연구는 미국의 초등학교 체육교사가 문화 감응 교수를 어떠한 방법과 양상으로 실천하고 있는지 규명하고자 하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 미국 조지아 주의 센트로(가명) 학군에 근무하는 세 명의 초등학교 체육교사들을 대상으로 반구조화된 면담과 비참여관찰을 통한 자료수집을 하였으며, 수집된 자료는 내용 분석(content analysis)을 통해 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같이 나타났다. 연구참여자들은 스포츠를 매개로 하여 다양한 학생들의 상호작용과 서로간의 이해를 돕고 있었으며 많은 체육수업이 다문화 가정 학생들의 긍정적인 자아 형성에 도움이 된다고 생각했다. 또한 교사가 열정과 인내심을 가지고 학생들과 좋은 관계를 만드는 것이 다문화 가정 학생들을 성공적으로 가르치는데 중요한 요소로 나타났다. 결론적으로 본 연구에 참여한 세 명의 체육교사 모두 문화 감응 교수가 설명하는 교수방법에 근거하여 교육현장에서 다문화교육을 실천하고 있었으나 문화 감응 교수의 세 가지 준거 중 학생들의 성공적인 학업성취 관련 내용은 잘 실천되었으나 사회체제와 질서에 대한 비판의식 내용은 미흡한 것으로 나타났다.
