This study criticizes Singer’s animal liberation through nonanthropocentric environmental ethics, a branch of the environmental ethics. The environmental ethicists contends that just as we are obliged ethically not to abuse or discriminate human beings,so we are obliged ethically to abstain ourselves from abusing or discriminating other species than human beings. The nonanthropocentric environmental ethics may be divided into individualistic environmental ethics focused on the units composing the ecosystem members and holistic environmental ethics encompassing not only the biological units composing the ecosystem but also the non-biological element or the surrounding environment. In the ecosystem, individual lifes are linked with each other in a food chain formed, and such individual lifes and their groups are inter-linked with each other internally, while forming an energy cycle with their surrounding non-life element. According to the holistic environmental ethics, what are important in the ecosystem are not individual lifes. Since they are mutually reliant on each other, our scope of ethical discussions need to encompass soil pollution, water pollution, depletion of resources, energy problems and further such environmental issues as global warming. Singer’s theory may be significant in that it extend the scope of the ethical community from human society to the societies of other species than human beings, but in view of the larger frame called ecosystem, it is deemed limited as an environmental ethics because it emphasizes the individualistic environmental ethics only.

본 논문에서는 환경윤리 중 비인간중심적 환경윤리를 통해 싱어의 동물해방론을 비판하였다. 인간을 대상으로 학대하거나 차별을 하는 행위를 금해야 할 도덕적 의무가 있듯이,환경윤리학자들은 인간 종이 아닌 다른 많은 종류의 생명체들을 학대하거나 차별하는 행위를 자제해야 할 도덕적 의무도 있다고 생각한다. 비인간중심적 환경윤리는 생태계를 구성하는 개체에 중심을 둔 개체론적 이론과 생물적 요소뿐 아니라 생태계를 구성하는 비생물적요소인 주변 환경까지 포함하는 전체론적 이론으로 분류된다. 전체론적 환경윤리에 의하면생태계에서 중요한 것은 개별 유기체가 아니라 그들의 상호 의존성을 지나기 때문에 토양오염, 수질오염, 자원고갈, 에너지문제, 더 나아가 지구온난화와 같은 환경문제까지 우리의 윤리적 논의의 대상에 포함시킬 수 있다. 싱어의 동물해방론은 종차별주의를 비판하며 동물의 도덕적 지위를 높임으로써 인간중심적이었던 사고의 영역을 넓히는 계기가 되었다는 점에서가치가 있다. 하지만 그의 이론은 개체론적 성격을 지님으로써 멸종 위기에 처한 종의 보호와 파괴되는 생태계의 보존에는 관심을 두지 않고, 동물을 넘어선 총체적인 생태계 문제에대한 종합적인 해결책을 제시하지 못하고 있다는 점이 아쉬운 점으로 남는다.
