This paper surveys a large and growing recent literature on economic growth and institutions. It traces how the two distinct lines of academic research, the evaluation of recent cross-country growth differentials since 1950, and the search for the causes of long-term divergence among countries since 1800, have reached the common conclusion that institutions are the fundamental causes of economic development. It also summarizes and assesses the debate over the methodology, proper interpretation of the findings and practical implications for the institutional reform in developing countries.

최근 장기 경제성장과 제도에 관한 학계의 연구가 급격히 늘어나고 있다. 새로운 발견과 그에 대한 반론들도 많은데 본고에서는 이들을 정리해 보았다. 제도론의 발흥에 이르게 되는 두 갈래의 학문적 궤도, 즉 전후 최근까지의 성장실적자료로부터 성장의 실증적 결정인자를 찾으려는 노력과 1800년 이후 서구의 장기성장과정을 설명하려는 노력이 어떻게 공통적으로 제도에 주목하게 되었는지를 추적해 보았다. 방법론이나 해석을 둘러싼 논쟁, 실제 제도개혁에 적용하려고 할 때 고려해야 할 사항들에 대한 토론 등도 요약하였다.
