An overview of research on contrastive rhetoric and the “Oriental” : Implications for the teaching of ESL writing

The purpose of this paper is to explore Kaplan's claim's about the rhetoric employed by "Oriental"students, review responses and criticisms by other scholars to his argument,and to survey more focused and detailed research that has examined the languages and rhetorical conventions of East Asia in the intervening decades-specifically the literature relating to Korea. Finally, some implications of these findings for the teaching of ESL composition will be addressed.
