Promoting a political party's ideology and policy was an important means of establishing the identity and gaining supporters and the party's symbol mark has become an important tool to promote the party as its face in case of re-branding existing images or reforming the party. Successful communication with the people can be achieved through effective public relations. Therefore, we should understand that the emblem fully reflects the party's intention and suggestions and above all, grasp whether the people precisely accept and interpret it as the party's purpose. For this purpose, the meaning of forms was analyzed on the basis of structural-semiotical analysis with the selected eight emblems of parties between 1990 and 2012. Results of the comparisons based on the party rules and constitution showed that the degree to which symbols are meaningful to people was comparatively high in New world, Liberty Forward, and Democratic Labor Party but the degree was relatively low in Democratic United, The Unified Progressive, The Uri, and Grand National Party. This mismatch between the form and meaning can bring about unsuccessful communication. Thus, an in-depth consideration about the meaning within the form will be needed to adopt the symbol mark.

정당의 이념과 정책의 홍보는 당의 정체성을 구축 하고 지지자를 확보하는 중요한 수단이 되었고, 기존 의 이미지를 쇄신하거나 재 창당하는 경우 심벌마크 는 정당의 얼굴로서 당을 홍보하는 중요한 수단이 되 어왔다. 효율적인 홍보를 통해 국민들과의 성공적인 커뮤니케이션을 이룰 수 있다. 따라서 정당의 심벌마 크가 당이 제시하고 의도하는 바를 충분히 반영하고 있는지, 무엇보다도 이러한 의도가 수신자인 국민들 에게 정확히 해석되어 받아들여지는지를 파악해보아 야 한다. 이를 위해 1990년부터 2012년까지 여덟 개의 정당 심벌마크를 선정하여, 이들 형태의 의미작 용에 대하여 구조기호학적 분석을 바탕으로 분석해 보았다. 각 정당별 심벌마크에서 구조기호학을 기반 으로 추출된 의미작용과 정당의 정책과 당헌·당규에 기반을 한 의미작용의 일치정도를 비교해 본 결과, 새누리당, 자유선진당, 민주노동당은 비교적 그 의미 작용이 일치하는 결과를 볼 수 있었으나, 민주통합당, 통합진보당, 열린우리당, 한나라당의 경우 많은 부분 에서 의미작용의 불일치를 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 의미작용의 불일치는 성공적이 지 못한 커뮤니케이션 결과로 나타날 수 있다. 따라서 심벌마크 도입에 있 어 형태에 내제된 의미작용에 대한 보다 심도 있는 고려가 있어야 할 것이다.
