In Europe, the largest Korean community is found in U.K. and the only Korean town of Europe is formed in New Malden, southeast of London. Nevertheless of demographic importance, a systematic research on the history and society of the Korean community has not been conducted yet. This paper is a preliminary research based on interviews conducted by the author in May of 2011 and some limited publications including several local community newspapers. History of the New Malden Korean Town can be traced to the 1990s. It is rather a new formed Korean town, only having 20 years of history. The development of the Korean town can be divided into four periods, including 1) explosive enlargement(1989-1997), 2) difficult times(1997-2002), 3) re-formed community(2002-2007), 4) stagnation(2007-2011). Main actors in the Korean Town were families of Korean businessmen who were despatched by several Korean firms. The people who had the British citizenship were a minority group. Majority of the community members were short-term dwellers such as businessmen, students, and job-seekers. After economic turndown two times, the Korean town in 2010s becomes changed. It becomes a multi-national and multi-ethnic communities including some British people who like Korean culture, Southeast Asians, and the second generation of the Koreans. North Koreans and Korean-Chinese are new members of the town. However, British citizenship holders are still minority group, so the future of the town can be dependent on the South Korean economic conditions. Through several Korean festivals and contacts with local people, relationship with the locals seems to be fairly good. However, inter-ethnic disputes are on-going problems of the town. In the Associations of the Koreans, and in the community newspapers and even in relationships among ethnic Koreans, division can be easily found. But the Korean wave is very much popular in London, and it can make a force to change the characteristics of the Korean town in future. If do so, the Korean town in London can be a permanent ethnic town like China town, which is rooted into the local British community.

뉴몰든은 유럽 내 유일한 코리아타운으로 영국 런던 남부에 위치하고 있다. 2010년 기준으로 유럽 거주 재외동포 중 40%인 4만 5,000명이 영국에 거주하며, 그 중 삼분지 일인 1만 5,000명 이상이 코리아타운에 거주한다. 뉴몰든이 속한 킹스턴지역 인구 중 한인은 12%로 지역 내 가장 큰 소수민족 집단이다. 1990년대 초반부터 형성된 코리아타운은 단기체류자인 상사주재원과 유학생이 중심이 되고, 시민권자나 영주권자등 정주자들은 이들을 지원하는 구조이다. 이런 특성이 이민국가가 아닌 영국에 코리아타운이 존재하는 이유이며, 한국의 변화 등 외부적 변화에 코리아타운이 더욱 영향을 받는 구조를 만들었다. 해외여행이 자유화된 1989년 이후 형성되어, 빠른 속도로 팽창한 코리아타운은, 1997년 아시아경제위기를 겪으면서 침체된다. 이후 21세기 들어 다시 팽창하다가 2008년 글로벌경제위기를 겪으면서 현재까지 또 다른 정체상태를 보이고 있다. 코리아타운의 주 업종은 서비스업으로 고객의 대다수는 한국인이다. 인구규모에 비래 다수인 언론과 분열된 한인회, 다양한 종교단체는 코리아타운 내 한인들의 상호 소통 구조를 보임과 동시에 다양한 갈등 양상을 표출하고 있다. 특히 조선족과 탈북자 등 다른 그룹의 한인들이 들어오면서, 코리아타운은 초국가적 이주공동체의 특징을 보이고 있다. 최근에 코리아타운은 새로운 세기를 맞이하고 있는데, 그것은 동포 차세대는 물론 K-Pop, K-Food 등 한류의 영향으로 외국인도 참여하는 새로운 공간으로 변화하고 있기 때문이다. 그러므로 국제화된 초국가적 이주공동체인 코리아타운이 다가오는 2012년 런던올림픽을 어떻게 활용하느냐에 따라, 런던 코리아타운의 미래는 새롭게 변화할 것이다.
