The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between seating positions and test scores of college TEFL students in Korea. The research subjects are sixty college students in Seoul: they majored in English education. During fall semester 2011, each student’s seating positions and his or her test scores in one of the major TEFL courses which was taught in English were recorded. The seats were divided into nine sections: front-middle-back, and left-center-right sections. The results revealed that the students' seating positions and their test scores were significantly correlated with each other. The students who earned the highest test scores preferred the left and center rows of the middle line. Those who earned the lowest test scores preferred the center row of the back line. The results are different from those of previous studies on seating position in western classroom settings. Suggestions and implications for classroom seating preferences are also made.

본 연구의 목적은 한국인 대학생들이 선택하는 강의실 좌석의 위치와 학업 성적의 상관관계를 알아보고자 함에 있다. 연구 대상은 현재 영어교육을 전공 또는 부전공하고 있는 60명의 서울 소재 대학의 학생들이다. 본 연구를 위하여 이 학생들이 한 학기 동안 수강한 한 영어 전용 전공 수업에서의 시험 점수와 그들이 앉은 좌석의 위치를 추적하여 기록하였다. 교실 좌석은 앞쪽, 중앙, 뒤쪽으로 나누고, 다시 오른쪽, 중앙, 왼쪽으로 나누어 총 아홉 구역으로 구분하였다. 본 연구는 학생들이 선택한 좌석의 위치와 시험 점수를 비교 분석하여 한국인 대학생의 강의실 좌석 위치 선택의 일반적인 패턴을 살펴보고, 이러한 일반적인 패턴을 따르지 않는 학생들의 경우는 인터뷰를 통하여 그 구체적인 원인을 규명해보고자 하였다.
