The aim of this study was to identify production ability of Korean learners of English in their articulation of English liquid /l, r/. Thirty non-sense syllables and six words were produced three times by nine undergraduate girl students. Test scores were measured from the score board made by FluSpeak, a speech training software program, which was designed for English pronunciation practice and improvement. Results show that 1) the subjects had higher scores in producing /l/ than /r/ in general and 2) subjects had lower scores in initial(pre-vocalic) position than in medial(inter-vocalic) position and in final(post-vocalic) position when they produced /l/. The results suggest that on the whole Korean learners have more articulatory problems in initial(pre-vocalic) position than in the other positions when they produce /l/ phoneme.

본 연구의 목적은 한국인 영어학습자들이 /l/과 /r/ 음소 발성의 능력을 평가하고자 하였다. 실험 자료는 영어 유음 /l/과 /r/이며, 이 두 가지 음소와 다섯 가지 모음 /a, e, i o, u/를 세 가지 음절 유형(CV, VC, VCV)에 맞추어 총 30개 무의미 음절을 임의로 구성하여 실험 자료로 활용하였다. 본 실험에 영어교육과에 재직 중인 학부학생들 중에서 여학생 9명이 참가하였다. 음소별로 발성 점수를 기준으로 살펴보면 /l/의 발성 평균 점수가 /r/보다 조금 더 높아 발성하기 더 쉬운 것으로 나타났지만 위치에 따라 차이가 났고, 무의미 음절을 사용한 실험에서 위치에 따른 /l/ 발성의 난이도는 VC에서 가장 발성하기 쉬웠으며, 다음으로 VCV, CV 순이었다. 이 연구 결과에 따라 영어 학습자의 유음 발음 문제를 파악할 수 있었고, 이 결과를 기초로 제한적이긴 하지만 영어 발음 지도 방법을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 본다.
