The purpose of this research was to examine major activities and roles through his life, his accomplishments he achieved based on oral history materials, and his love physical education and sports. The results are as follows. First, Sir Haedong was faithful to the responsibility and duty as a teacher and trained a lot of excellent sportsmen Also, he was a true athlete and sportsmen with a constant challenging spirit and skilled in both literary and martial arts. Second, Sir Haedong was a practical educator who made a great effort to improve the scene of education through participating in research societies, writing textbooks and workbooks related to Physical Education and doing on-site practice based on research related to curriculum, evaluation and process of learning. However, most of his achievements are limited to training elite sports and he didn’t provide new directions of physical education in school. Third, despite his old age, Sir Haedong is trying to rediscover the people who devoted themselves to Kangwon athlete and sports but were disregarded through qualitative research and history research.

이 연구는 구술생애사로, 구술 자료를 토대로 해동 선생 한 개인을 조명하여 해동(海東) 선생의 삶에서 나타난 주요 활동을 살펴보고, 그가 성취한 발자취 그리고 그의 체육ㆍ스포츠 사랑을 탐구해 보는 데 목적이 있다. 이와 관련한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 해동 선생은 교사로서의 책무와 복무에 충실하면서도 많은 엘리트 운동선수를 육성했을 뿐만 아니라, 끊임없는 도전 정신은 물론 문ㆍ무를 겸비한 진정한 체육인이며, 스포츠맨이었다. 둘째, 해동 선생은 체육과 교육과정, 체육과 교수ㆍ학습 및 평가와 관련된 실천적 현장교육연구, 체육 참고서, 체육 문제집, 체육 교과서의 집필, 그리고 여러 체육연구회를 통해 교육현장을 개선하려고 부단히 노력하고 실행했던 교육자였다. 그러나 그 당시 그가 성취한 대부분은 엘리트스포츠에 국한되어 있었고, 학교체육의 새로운 방향을 모색하고 실천하기에는 역부족이었다. 셋째, 해동 선생은 늦은 나이지만 강원 체육ㆍ스포츠를 위해 노력하고, 희생했던 많은 사람들, 숨겨져 있었고, 외면당해 왔던 사람들에게 햇빛을 보게 하기 위하여 질적 연구인 구술사와 생애사, 구술생애사 연구를 통해서 그들을 재조명하고자 노력하고 있다.
