One of the most powerful issues lately is an environ-mental issue. For the packaging industry eco-friendly trends are positive, encouraging innovation and expansion of packaging materials to replace from Styrofoam and polyvinyl chloride to decomposable bio-degradable plastic. At the social background, the object of this study is to establish the guideline of the eco-friendly packaging to develope environmental strategies. The contents of this research are about the fundamental notions of the eco-friendly packaging, application categories, the present state of the trend of eco-packaging and materials. It also shows policies and regulations, principles, checklist, and analysis the guidelines for eco-packaging. The first principle is to design an environmentally sound packaging cycle that consider all material inputs and energy sources during its whole life-cycle. Second, consider all the multiple elements including cost, quality, marketability, and design. Third, collaborate with suppliers, the scientific community, and designers. In conclusion, as methods of approach for a paradigm shift of sustainable package design, this study suggests three ways which are Bio-mimicry, Natural Capitalism, and Anti-packaging. With the efforts to follow the eco-friendly programs, it will ensure environmental preservation and contribute to cut down expenses for the future. I expect various studies on this approach should be followed.

디자인에 있어서 지속가능한 디자인은 우리 사회의 커다란 이슈 가운데 하나로서 등장하였다. 특히 패키지디자인 분야에서는 환경성 및 경제성 측면이 강조된다. 포장원료 선정에서부터 생산, 판매, 사용 후 재활용이나 폐기 과정에 걸쳐서 자원을 절약하고 에너지 효율을 높임으로서 지구의 미래 환경을 지키기 위한 지속가능한 디자인의 필요성이 크다. 본 연구에서는 지속가능성의 의미와 개념을 명확히 고찰하고 패러다임의 변화에 따른 지속가능한 패키지디자인의 적용방법에 대한 이론적 근거를 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 연구방법은 국내외 전문서적, 선행연구 논문 등의 문헌자료와 인터넷 자료를 중심으로 하였다. 연구의 내용은 첫째, 이론적 자료 및 선행연구를 토대로 지속가능한 패키지디자인의 개념을 살펴보고 연구의 이론적 근거를 마련하였다. 둘째, 패러다임의 변화에 따른 지속가능한 패키지디자인을 의미를 고찰하고 지속가능한 패키지디자인의 가이드라인을 고찰하였다. 가이드라인의 내용은 자원절감과 물질사용량 절감, 재활용성 확대, 에너지 효율 향상, 유해물질 저감과 안전성 확보, 폐기 효율성을 중심으로 하고 있다. 셋째, 21세기 지속가능성의 새로운 패러다임과 이에 따른 패키지디자인의 역할, 접근방법을 도출하였다. 결론으로서 첫째, 생체모방디자인 측면과 둘째, 자연자본주의적 측면 셋째, 안티패키징 측면을 중심으로 패키지디자인 적용 가능성을 고찰하였다. 이러한 접근 방법에 대한 다양한 관점에서의 후속연구가 뒤따라야 할 것이라 사료된다.
