This paper aims to explain the commercial publication and inheritance of traditional values of Joseonhwanyeoseungram(朝鮮寰輿勝覽) through analyzing the structure, contents, the way of distribution and responses by the readers of it. Moreover, This paper also will examine the inheritance of traditional values having been formed in and out of this book in drastic change of Korean social structure. This book claims to succeed the purpose to publish Dongkukyeojiseungram(東國輿地勝覽) and follow the structure and the contents of it overall, however it differs from the pre-modern publications in terms of its containing the facts and narrative style of modern times. Actually, Joseonhwanyeoseunglam had been published one by one as an independent unit of Gun(郡) district but under one title covering Joseon, so it could not only inherit the purpose of the traditional books, but also enhance the merit of commercial publication as town chronicle satisfying the demand of the local Confucians who had been main consumers and especially had a keen interest in their districts. Joseonhwanyeoseungram seems to have been considered as a media carrying public values and authority, so the local Confucians wanted to be the main agent to select, succeed and form the traditional values, participating in the modern publishing market. This is where Joseonhwanyeoseungram shows its special characteristic as a means of Confucians' honor and the local community's for the purpose of establishing and enhancing their identity and status who tried to maintain the power against being edged out of mainstream in modern times. Also the difference between Joseonhwanyeoseungram and same kinds of books in pre-modern times can be found in this point.

『조선환여승람』은 충남 공주(公州)의 유학자인 이병연(李秉延, 1894-1977) 이 각 지역의 유림들과 협력하고, 지방마다 보고원을 위촉하여 대전 보문사(普文社)에서 간행한 20세기 인문지리서이다. 본서는 『동국여지승람』의 체재와 내용을 계승하면서, 전통적 사회규범과 가치를 집약적으로 반영하는 사적(史的) 편찬서로 서, 당시 지역 사회의 유림의 정체성 구축과 위상 확립을 위한 목적과 읍지 편찬의 시대적 상황 등의 요인들이 복합적으로 작용하여 출현한 상업 출판물이다. 본고에서는 전통시기 인문지리지를 계승하고 있는 『조선환여승람』의 체재와 구 성, 내용 등을 전통시기 승람류, 읍지 등과 비교․분석한 후, 20세기 상업적 출판 물로 간행․유통되는 방식과 독자들의 반응 등을 바탕으로 책을 통한 근현대 시기 의 전통적 가치 계승과 형성의 측면을 설명하고자 하였다. 『조선환여승람』의 체재와 구성은 전통 승람류를 대부분 그대로 계승하면서도, 내용과 서술 방식에 있어서 근현대 시기의 특징을 보인다. 또한, 독립적인 군 단위 의 책을 하나의 체재 안에 묶는 출판 방식을 통해, 전통시기의 관찬서의 편찬 명분 을 그대로 이어받으면서도 개별 군의 정보를 상세히 담아 주요 구매층의 요구에 부응하는 상업 출판물로서의 가치를 높일 수 있었던 것으로 생각된다. 유림들은 본서를 공적 가치와 권위를 지닌 매체로 인식하였기 때문에, 전통시기 와 달라진 사회적 여건 속에서 제도권에 대한 영향력이 점차 약화되는 가운데, 근대 상업 출판 시장에 책을 간행․유통시켜, 전통적 가치의 수호와 실현의 주체가 되고자 하였다. 이는 전통시기 여타의 지리서들이나 읍지들과 그 편찬 목적과 향유 방식의 차이가 발견되는 지점이며, 당대 사회의 작동 원리를 반영한 일면이다.
