In this paper, an international video artist Nam June Paik found in the life of a musician than as an artist as a pioneer in the sound will be observed. The emergence of soundart could stem from atonal music around 1910. Accepting noises, the music has been expanding realm of sound and deconstructing boundary of music. Also Art genre has been deconstructing Music genre as expanded realm of sound over variety intersection and experiment in media art. In the process, soundart has been established itself firmly as a new genre and it could find foundation of concept in Baik Nam Jun's early music works. He agonized about 'musical ontology' and showed the transformation process of searching for all through his works. As the effect of his experiment, contemporary soundart is able to take its course, and understand of relationship between art and daily life and then the public. As a video artist Nam June Paik, as well as ahead of time as a sound artist is giving a big impact on contemporary sound art.

본 논문에서는 백남준이 세계적 비디오아티스트로서 보다 음악가로서의 면모에서 발견하는 사운드아티스 트로서의 선구자적 역할에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다. 사운드아트의 출현은 1910년경 무조음악에서부터 비롯되었다고 할 수 있다. 음악이 소음을 수용하면서 소 리에 대한 영역을 넓히고 음악의 경계를 해체 시켜나갔다. 또한 미술쟝르는 미디어아트에서 다양한 접목 과 실험을 해나가면서 사운드의 영역을 확장하며 음악과의 장르를 허물어가고 있다. 이런 과정 속에서 사 운드아트라는 새로운 장르영역이 자리 잡아 나가고 있으며 이는 바로 백남준의 초기 음악적 활동에 나타 나는 형태에서 그 개념적 기초를 찾을 수 있다. 그는 음악적 존재론을 고민하고 그의 작품세계에서 늘 탐 구의 변화과정을 담아내었다. 그 과정들 속에서 현대의 사운드아트의 방향을 찾아갈 수 있으며 예술과 일 상 그리고 대중과의 관계를 쉽게 풀어 나갈 수 있게 되었다. 백남준은 비디오아티스트로서 뿐만이 아니라 시대를 앞서간 사운드아티스트로서도 현대 사운드아트에 큰 영향을 주고 있다.
