The antecedents of Green IT adoption: Institutional pressure and total cost of ownership perspectives

초록

영어

As Information and communication technology (ICT) became an integral part of doing business, their environmental footprint has increased rapidly. IT equipment such as PC, printers, servers, and monitors, is known to be guzzlers of energy. On the other hand, IT can be utilized to facilitate green policies and business models. A number of countries including Korea have been struggling to find economically sound solutions to solve environmental problems, and to create sustainable growth. In this study, we examine the factors that influence corporations’ participation in Green IT initiatives. The focus of the study is companies’ adoption of environmentally friendly ICT equipment. We draw exogenous factors contrasting two perspectives: institutional pressure and TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). While TCO provides rationality to the decision adoption (cost versus benefit), institutional pressure is social in nature. To validate our assumptions, we conducted a survey targeting managers of IT departments in Korean organizations. Our results indicate that while TCO had some affect on the adoption of green IT institutional pressure had no influence on organizational adoption of green IT. Our results also show that the adoption of different types of green IT technologies is affected by different antecedents.
