Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) conducted a study to investigate the need of pharmaceutical companies for R&D projects. In this study, we found that the biopharmaceutical companies are highly interested and invested in the monocolonal antibodies. Moreover, it was observed that advanced biopharmaceuticals including monoclonal antibodies, cell therapy were the ones which KFDA support is needed the most. There were also huge demands among those companies for KFDA's assistance in areas of review and approval. In addition, it was observed that companies which produced vaccines needed practical assistance regarding production of samples for clinical trials. Results of this study were similar to the international analytical reports on biopharmaceuticals.

수요조사 대상 바이오의약품 기업들의 자본형태는 순수 국내법인이 77.3%로 가장 높았으며, 매출규모는 200억이상의 기업이 35.4%로 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다. 바이오의약품 기업들의 연구개발비 규모를 살펴보면 국내법인의 경우 5억 미만인(22.1%) 경우가 많았으며, 그 중 연구개발비의 비중이 가장 많은 품목은 단클론항체(19.7%)로 조사 되었다. 연구개발 기관별 관심분야를 살펴본 결과, 연구개발 여부와 무관하게 많은 기업들이 단클론항체에 관심(50.0%)을 보이고 있는 것으로 조사 되었다. 바이오의약품 기업들이 꼽은 식약청에게서 실질적으로 도움이 필요한 품목은 단클론항체(24.9%)의 비중이 가장 많이 나타났으며 식약청의 실질적 지원이 필요한 분야의 조사한 결과도 품목의 특성에 따른 차이가 있었으나 대체로 단클론항체, 세포치료제와 같은 최근 개발되기 시작한 첨단바이오의약품 분야였다. 또한 이에 대한 전반적인 ‘허가심사 분야’에 대한 지원 요청이 많았다. 비교적 개발 역사가 오래 경과된 백신분야는 ‘임상시험 샘플 생산’과 같은 실제적인 항목의 지원 요청이 높았다. 바이오의약품의 국제시장 예측 보고서 내용에서도 언급된 바와 같이 바이오의약품 중 단클론항체 분야의 높은 성장률 예측과 함께 가장 큰 시장성을 보인다고 분석하여 국내바이오의약품 업체를 대상으로 한 본 설문조사의 분석 결과와 유사한 것으로 조사되었다.
