Effects of Brain Development Program for the Youth on Changes in EEG by Brain Areas Depending on Level of Concentration and Mental Power

Abstract : This study is designed to examine the effects of applying brain development program for youth on changes in EEG by brain areas depending on the level of concentration and mental power with total 40 male high school students who were assigned to 20 experimental group and 20 comparative group. For this, brain development program was administered to experimental group for 50 min. per session, four times a week for total 10 weeks and general learning program was given to comparative group. Changes in EEG were analyzed when the subjects performed higher cognitive task using eight EEG measurement system in order to examine the level of concentration. Mental power was measured with mental power questionnaire developed by Loehr (1982) and revised and complemented by Koh Byeong-jin (2005). As a result of analysis, it was found that the brain areas used for improving concentration are functionally connected to right temporal lobe (T4) and right parietal lobe (T4) centering around prefrontal lobe (Fp1, Fp2) and strengthening concentration was achieved through a significant increase of SMR wave and M-Beta wave utilized as intensive index of neurophysiological brain waves in the whole frequency band. In changes of mental power, experimental group showed significant increases in such sub-factors as self-confidence, arousal control, attention control, motivation level, and positive energy compared to comparative group.
