Foreign language anxiety has been researched in second language acquisition and many researchers have indicated that anxiety has negative effects on language learning. In this study, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (Horwitz et al, 1986) was administered to investigate what kind of anxieties freshman university students have in required English classes. 215 university students participated in this study. The data was collected twice, before and after the term, to see if types of anxieties changed. Based on the results, implications for English classroom teaching are discussed in this paper. Giving both teachers and students opportunities to think about the student psychological aspect of language learning and what teachers can do to create a low‐anxiety environment. Teachers should pay more attention to student anxieties and take them into consideration when designing lessons and activities. In that regard, sharing the teacher expectations with the students would help students better prepare for classes and become more effective learners in the classroom.

大学全入時代と言われる近年、日本の大学生の深刻な基礎学力の低下が報告されている。学生の英語力を把握し、不足している英語力を補完するための支援体制やカリキュラム改革に向けた取り組みと一つとして、外国語学習不安に焦点を当てて考える。外国語不安は、第二言語習得に特異で、明確な過程である(Horwitz et al., 1986)。外国語不安に関して様々な研究がなされているが、一貫していえることは、不安は言語学習を妨げる要因となっているということである。言語使用やコミュニケーションに関する不安は、外国語の習得に大きく影響するものであり、言語習得の過程において重要な役割を果たす不安をいかに克服し、学習をスムーズに進めるかが課題である。本研究では、私立大学文系学部の新入生215名を対象に、Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scaleを用いて、教室内における外国語学習不安の実態調査を行った。必修英語クラス内での外国語学習に関する不安因子を明らかにするとともに、4月と9月の調査における不安の変化についても報告する。また、学習者中心主義の概念に基づき行った、学習スタイルや伸ばしたい英語力などを含めた学生のニーズ調査の結果から、学生の学習意欲を喚起し、英語力を定着させるための授業とはどのようなものであるか、外国語学習不安を減少させるためのクラスづくりと言語活動についても考える。
