The Effects of Bicycle Ergometer Exercise on Physical Fitness and ADL in the Elderly Women with Dementia

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of bicycle ergometer exercise on physical fitness(strength, flexibility, agility, balance, endurance) and activity of daily living(ADL) in elderly women with dementia. Forty patient were participated in the study as subjects and were assigned. The subjects carried on exercising, 30~60minute a day, 3 times per week for 10 weeks. Physical fitness and ADL were evaluated before and at the end of the program, using Senior Fitness Test and Korean Modified Bathel Index(K-MBI). The collected data were analyzed by paired t-test using PASW 18.0 Statistics. The results of this study were summarized as follows : There were significant improvement in strength of lower(p<.001) and upper extremity(p<.001), flexibility of lower(p<.001) and upper extremity(p<.001), balance(p<.001), endurance(p<.001) and ADL(p<.001) at time of pre and post following the exercise. Also, time of agility was sigificantly decrease(p<.001) at time of pre and post following the exercise. In conclusion, bicycle ergometer exercise can be effective on physical fitness and ADL in elderly women with dementia. In addition, this exercise may be prevent fall of the patient with dementia by improve strength of lower extremity and balance.
