This study examined the roles and tasks of dance education as culture and art education mainly through literature review, and drew conclusions as follows. The roles of dance education as culture and art education are：1) succession of cultural
heritages; 2) establishment of national identity; 3) realization of cultural democracy; 4) social integration; 5) self‐realization; 6) development of creativity; 7) all‐round education; and 8) integrated education. In order for dance education to play these roles adequately, there should be：1) the independence of the dance curriculum; 2) expanded administrative support of human and material resources; 3) promotion of professional personnel and organizations for dance education and development of training and education programs; 4) reinforcement of dance educators’ pride and competence; 5) development of various dance education program and contents; and 6) mass media’s right perception of and support to dance.
When dance education is promoted and supported with the clear understanding of these roles and tasks, it will be executed effectively in school and society, and culture and art education through dance will be guided in the right direction. After all, dance education will reach its ultimate goal of culture and art education.

본 연구는 문헌연구를 토대로 문화예술교육으로서의 무용교육의 역할과 과제에 대해 고찰한 연구이며, 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다.
문화예술교육으로서의 무용교육의 역할은 1) 문화유산의 전승 2) 민족의 정체성 확립 3) 문화민주주의 이념 실현 4) 사회 통합 5) 자아실현 6) 창의성 배양 7) 전인교육 8) 통합교육 등이다.
이러한 역할을 올바로 수행하기 위한 무용교육의 과제는 1) 무용교과 독립 2) 인적물적 자원의 행정적 지원 확대 3) 무용교육을 위한 전문인력과 단체 육성, 이를 위한 연수 및 교육 프로그램 개발 4) 무용교육자들의 자부심 고취와 역량강화 5) 다양한 무용교육 프로그램 및 콘텐츠 개발 6) 무용에 대한 대중매체(언론, 미디어 등)의 올바른 인식 전환과 지원 등이다.
이상의 역할과 과제를 올바르게 인식하고 무용의 지원이나 교육이 이루어질 때, 학교교육과 사회교육에서 무용교육이 효과적으로 이루어질 것이며, 무용을 통한 문화예술교육은 올바른 방향으로 나아갈 것이다. 결국 문화예술교육으로서의 무용교육은 궁극적인 목표에 도달하게 될 것이다.
