This paper tries to propose the new approach of expression in body arts by utilizing the void space, the creative space that contains limitless potentials and acceptance and expresses the internal will, the mental background of an artist, in a body art. The 'void space' in a diverse kind of emptiness and filling which harmonizes the forms rather than the shapes expressed in one form of a space 'body' that was examined using my works. This paper aims to propose new concept in creating designs as well as implement new approaches of body art design. The methodologies are theoretic deliberation and empirical research by producing my works. The results are presented below. The first feature is tendency. The effects of void space which seems an incomplete creation on the works of tendency by using the accidental effects and the ink that can easily penetrate in a Korean traditional paper, the representative material of Korea. Accordingly, the formation of tendency through a formation of contingency of void space is the important element of an artist's spirits. The second is implication. The void space in this work doesn’t have an explanation for a minimized space. However, it has the implication that is symbolic through an imagination and association. The void space implies the maximum effects meaning there is an eternity to the audience while it is not drawn nor explained. Next is the spatio-temporal. The void space in this work goes beyond the limited space, the 'body'. It doesn’t divide the boundary between the inside and outside of a body but tries to connect limitless external space beyond spatial limit. The work can create a story by connecting the outside without observing only the space 'body' in accordance with the experience or awareness of the audience upon appreciating the works. The final feature is truth and mutual sustainability. The void space is not an empty space but the truth means one form in a work. In other words, although it seems that nothing exists, the void space implies the mental substance of an artist in such emptiness. The void space means more profound and authentic truth to complete the truth.

여백(Void Space)은 예술분야를 비롯한 많은 분야에서 다루어지고 있는 미의 표현방법이다. 여백은 어떠한 현상이나 실체에 대한 철학적 고찰로부터 시작한다. 어쩌면 우리의 삶 자체의 문제까지 다루어지기에 그 범위는 더 광범위하다고 볼 수 있다. 이와 같은 배경은 여백 자체가 비움의 미학이며 소통할 수 있는 공간이며 생각할 수 있는 문제에 대한 것들을 다양하게 표현하여 왔기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 무한한 가능성과 수용을 함축하고 있으면서 작가의 정신적 배경인 내적의지를 표현하는 여백이라는 창조적 공간을 조형적 측면에서 이해하였다. 여백의 미를 바디아트에 표현함으로서 바디아트의 새로운 표현방법을 제시하는 것은 의의가 있다고 사료되어 본 연구를 시도하였다. 본 연구를 위한 작품에서 본 연구자의 마음이 투영된 서정성을 여백의 조형언어로 표현 하고자 하였다. 바디라는 공간 안에서 하나의 형태로 표현된 형상보다 그 형태를 조화롭게 만드는 다양한 비움과 채움의 '여백'을 본인 작품을 통해 바라보았다. 여백을 통한 바디아트 디자인의 새로운 접근을 시도하고 바디아트디자인 창출의 새로운 관점을 제시하고자 하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 연구방법은 이론적 고찰과 본인의 작품제작을 통한 실증적 고찰을 병행하였다. 이론적 고찰을 통해 여백의 조형적 의미를 파악하고 이를 토대로 본 연구자의 작품에 표현된 외적형식에 따른 내적의미를 찾아 결론으로 도출하였다. 작품에 담겨진 여백의 내적의지를 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 傾向性이다. 미완성처럼 보이는 여백의 효과는 한국을 대표하는 소재라고 할 수 있는 한지에 침투하기 쉬운 먹을 이용하여 우연의 효과를 이용한 경향성의 작품을 구성하였다. 그림의 선과 형의 형상은 여백에 의해 더욱 실이 되고 이렇게 표현된 실에서 여백의 허는 실의 근간이 되는 것이다. 따라서 여백의 우연성의 형성에 따른 경향성의 형성은 작가의 중요한 정신을 이루고 있다. 둘째, 含蓄性이다. 본 작품의 여백에는 구체적인 설명이 없고 최소화된 공간이다. 그러나 그 안에 연상과 상상을 통하여 상징성을 띠고 있는 함축효과를 지니고 있다. 그려지지 않은 공간이고 설명되어지지 않은 공간이지만 많은 함축적 의미를 내포하고 있다. 여백의 공간이 조형적으로 최소화된 공간이라 하더라도 관찰자에게 무한성을 의미하는 최대의 효과를 함축하고 있는 것이다. 본 작품에서는 복잡한 것이 아닌 단순한 것, 고요한 것, 생략의 함축성을 의미하고 있다. 셋째, 時空間性이다. 본 작품에서의 여백은 바디라는 제한된 공간의 한계를 뛰어넘는다. 바디의 안과 밖의 경계를 나누지 않고 공간적 한계를 넘어 무한한 외부 공간과의 연결을 유도하고 있다. 작품을 감상하는데 있어 관찰자의 경험이나 지각에 따라 바디라는 공간 안에서만 관조하는 것이 아니라 밖까지 연결시켜 이야기를 만들어 낼 수 있는 것이다. 넷째, 虛實相生性이다. 여백은 비워놓은 공간이 아니라 작품 속에서 하나의 형을 의미하는 실이다. 즉 아무것도 없는 것 같지만 이러한 비원진 허에서 작가의 정신적 실제를 암시하고 있는 것이다. 여백은 허이지만 더 깊고 진실한 실을 의미하기도 하며 실을 완성시키는 공간이다.
