This paper examined the "checkered poetic career" and the "critical characteristics" of Tatsuji Miyoshi, focusing on On a Camel's Hump, which is deemed to have opened a new poetic horizon in his later poetic career. The examination revealed two points. First, it is safe to regard the first-person narrator of this poem as Miyoshi himself. We can say that Miyoshi entrusted his own voice to the poetic self. Second, although On a Camel's Hump represents both Miyoshi's checkered poetic career and social criticism, interpreting the poem with emphasis on the latter coincides with the poet's intention. Furthermore, the object of his social criticism is not clearly presented in the poem, but the present study reached a conclusion that the object would be "society," "power," or the "poetic community," which surrounds him. Some critiques argued that On a Camel's Hump was a work in his later career with a high degree of completion based on the fact that his social criticism excluded his self-criticism, but the present paper raised an objection to this argument. Evaluation of a poem may differ depending on the criteria of each evaluator, and On a Camel's Hump can be highly regarded from the perspectives of lyric style and tradition. However, it is worthwhile to consider how to evaluate a poem which excludes self-criticism in assessing a highly critical and satirical poem.

本稿では三好晩年に新しい詩的境地を切り開いたと評価される｢駱駝の瘤にまたがつて｣を中心に三好の＜詩的遍歴>と＜批評の性格>について考察した。本稿の考察を通して得た結論を要約すると次のようになる。まず、作品中の1人称の詩的話者が三好詩人であると考えるのは無難であるということである。三好が自分の意図を作品の詩的話者に託したと言うことができる。そして第に、この作品は＜詩的遍歴>としての性格を持つと同時に＜社会批評的>な性格を持っているが、両者の中、かえって後者の方に重きをおいて解釈するのが詩人の製作意図と符合するということである。ひいてはそういう＜社会批評>の対象がこの作品中には明確に示されていないが、＜社会>とか＜権力>，＜詩壇>などを、三好を囲んでいる他社として受け入れてもいいということである。しかし、このような＜社会批評>が＜自己批評>の排除された性質のものであるということを通して、｢駱駝の瘤にまたがつて｣が三好晩年の完成度の高い作品であるという評価に異議を唱えた。作品に対する評価は評者の基準によって異なることが有りうる。叙情と伝統に立脚した作品論自体の観点からはこの作品が高く評価されることも可能である。しかし、批評的性格が強い作品の評価をするにあたって＜自己批評>を排除した作品をどのように評価すべきかにおいては考慮の余地があるように思われる。
